Lot 1500    

1862 (Jun. 21) London, England to New Orleans La., folded cover with red "London Paid, JU 21 62" cds and matching "5 / Cents" credit handstamp, manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid packet rating, "VIA UNITED STATES" straightline directional handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Scotia from Queenstown Jun. 22nd to New York arriving Jul. 1st, sharp strike of "N.York Am. Pkt. 'Paid 24' Jul 1 1862" integral credit exchange cds, Very Fine and scarce Civil War use with the "Via United States" directional handstamp.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

New Orleans fell to the Union on April 25th of this year, accounting for the use of the "Via United States" directional handstamp. The New York exchange cds is unusual with the year designation that Winter lists as #42 from only 1862 and 1863. The same cds without the year designation is recorded from July 14th 1862 to June 18th 1868.

1862 (Jun. 28) New York N.Y. to Amsterdam, Netherlands, folded cover endorsed "P. Str. Etna, proof. open mail via Ostend", bearing 1¢ blue (63) and two 10¢ green (68) singles, tied by New York foreign mail circular grid cancels (Kirke 61-11-20-GR) and red "N. York Am. Pkt., Paid, Jun 28" exchange cds, slightly indistinct blue "E. SCHUGHARDT & SONS/ 20/ BANKERS/ NEW YORK" merchant oval, carried by Inman Line Etna from New York Jun. 28th to Queenstown arriving Jul. 10th, red London (7.11) transit backstamp and manuscript "4" pence debit to The Netherlands, Amsterdam (7.13) arrival backstamp and manuscript "55" Dutch cents due rating; small bottom edge mend, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This letter was paid 21¢ for American packet rate only to England, from where it went unpaid to destination.

1862 (Aug. 16) Rome, Roman States to Milwaukee Wisc., folded cover withe blue "Roma, 15 Ago 62" origin cds, red Marseilles (8.20) transit cds and "36" decimes due rating, manuscript "4" indicating four-times rate, carried by Allan Line North American from Liverpool Aug. 21st to Quebec arriving Sep. 3rd, blue "Chicago Am. Pkt. Sep 6" exchange cds with matching "Br Service" chamfered handstamp and manuscript "$1.08" due rating; some light tone spots, F.-V.F. and scarce use through the Chicago Exchange office.

1862 (Dec. 31) Liverpool, England to Portland Me., datelined folded letter with "Paid Liverpool, 1 JA 63" cds and matching red "21/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., red manuscript "1/-" one-shilling prepaid rating, carried on Allan Line Jura departing Londonderry Jan. 2nd to Portland arriving Jan 13th, sharp "Portland Me. Am. Pkt. 'Paid 24' Jan 14 1863" exchange cds over credit handstamp, Very Fine.

1863 (Feb. 14) New York N.Y. to Leipzig, Saxony, docketed gray folded cover with blue "W. Schall & Co. / New York" chamfered box backstamp and matching "BY STr. HANSA" straightline directional handstamp, carried by NGL Line Hansa from New York Feb. 14th to Bremerhaven arriving Feb. 27th, blue "AMERICA / ÜBER BREMEN" two-line handstamp and matching large "6½" kreuzer due handstamp, additional blue crayon "6-" and blue manuscript "5/10" ratings, arrival backstamp; tiny edge tear, Very Fine and choice use with the Schaal directional handstamp.

1863 (Jun. 8) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to New York N.Y., blue folded Lanman & Kemp correspondence letter endorsed "p. Str. Parana Via Southampton", reverse with two partial strikes of blue "Rio de Janeiro, JU 9" origin double-arc and red "London, JY 6, 63" transit backstamp, black "24/Cents" rocking debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Inman Line City of London from Liverpool Jul. 8th to New York arriving Jul. 19th, black "New-York Am. Pkt. Jul 19" exchange cds with matching "45" and sharp "U.S. Notes / 53" depreciated currency handstamp, Very Fine and early depreciate currency cover, ex-Hahn.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This was rated at the 45¢ rate in coin, or 53¢ due in depreciated greenback currency with a 1.18 inflation. The "Parana" was a 2,250 ton ship that made 3 Galway trips on charter, became a hulk in 1868.

Pkt. '3' Jun 27" exchange cds, carried by Inman Line City of New York from New York Jun. 27th to Queenstown arriving Jul. 7th, red London Paid (7.8) cds, clean and Very Fine use.

1863 (Jul. 27) Buenos Aires, Argentina to New York N.Y., blue datelined folded letter endorsed "p Steamer via Southampton" with blue "Manterls & Pfeiffler, Buenos Aires" forwarder's oval, Buenos Ayres (7.28) backstamp, carried by Royal Mail Steam Packet Oneida from Buenos Aires Jul. 30th to Southampton arriving Aug. 31st, red London (8.31) backstamp, matching red "40/Cents" credit handstamp struck in error and obliterated with "34" barred oval, proper "40/Cents" debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Galway Line Adriatic from Galway, Ireland Sep. 1st to New York arriving Sep. 12th, "New York Br. Pkt. Sep 12" exchange cds and matching "45" due handstamp and "U.S. Notes / 56" depreciated currency due handstamp, Very Fine.

AN EXCEPTIONAL DEPRECIATED CURRENCY COVER CARRIED BY THE GALWAY LINE.

The Galway Line only operated from 1858 to 1864. Departures were from Galway, Ireland prior to August 1863, when the Line was reorganized and began sailing from Liverpool and calling at Galway. This cover was carried on the second of only 11 voyages originating in Liverpool; the letter had missed the Sep. 1 departure from Liverpool so was picked up on the way westward.
