1864 (Feb. 1) Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to Portland Me., blue datelined folded letter with handwritten market report of local prices for imports of fish, shingles and lumber, endorsed "p. Genrl. Armstrong via New Haven", entered mails with "New Haven Ct. Feb 22" cds and matching framed "Ship" and "6" rating handstamps, fresh and Very Fine.

1864 (Feb. 4) London, England to San Francisco Cal., blue folded cover with blue London (2.4.64) origin backstamp, red "D" and circled "X" handstamps, black "TOO LATE, G.P.O." circular handstamp and "19/Cents" debit handstamp, although endorsed "South America" for steamer La Plata leaving for St. Thomas on February 2nd but apparently too late and carried by Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool Feb. 6th to Boston arriving Feb. 21st, black "24" due rating, then by central overland mail route to San Francisco, some staining, otherwise Very Fine.

1864 (Feb. 27) New York N.Y. to Shanghai, China, blue folded cover bearing 24¢ grayish lilac (78a) pair and 5¢ brown (76, replacement), cancelled by circular grid cancels, red "N.York Am. Pkt. 'Paid' Feb 27" exchange cds and magenta "32" credit to G.B., carried by Inman Line City of Manchester from New York Feb. 27th to Queenstown arriving Mar. 11th, red London Paid (3.14) transit and matching "1d" Colonial credit handstamp. then by P&O Massilia from Marseilles Mar. 29th to Alexandria arriving Apr. 4th, then P&O Rangoon from Suex Apr. 5th to Galle arriving Apr. 21st, then P&O Emeu from Galle Apr. 21st to Hong Kong arriving May 6th, and then P&O Ganges to Shanghai arriving May 12th, reverse with blue Hong Kong (5.6) transit backstamp, Very Fine appearance; signed Ashbrook on reverse.

1864 (May 4) San Francisco Cal. to Baden, Germany, cover bearing 10¢ green (68), pair and single, each tied by neat strike of fancy cogwheel cancel, matching "San Francisco Cal, May 4, 1864" cds, a 2¢ overpayment of the 28¢ rate to Baden, red "N. York Br. Pkt. '7 Paid' Jun 1" exchange cds, carried on Cunard Persia departing New York Jun. 1st to Queenstown arriving Jun. 11th, red "Aachen Franco, 14/6" framed transit, Baden (6.14) arrival backstamp; trimmed slightly at top, Very Fine and attractive use.

1864 (Jun. 10) Penrith, England to New Haven Ct., cover with "Penrith, JU 10, 64" cds, double treaty rate sent unpaid with blue crayon "38" cents debit to U.S., carried on Cunard Line America departing Liverpool Jun. 11th to Boston arriving Jun. 24th, "Boston Br. Pkt., Jun 24" exchange cds and rare "IN U.S. NOTES, 96" circular depreciated currency handstamp, small edge tear and wrinkles, otherwise Very Fine.

1864 (Jun. 19) Queenstown, England to Boston Mass., blue folded letter bearing "United States' Consulate, Forwarded by Nicholas G. Seymour & Co. Agents, Queenstown" black on white label, entered mails with red "Queenstown, JU 19 1854" cds overstruck with sharp strike of black "19 / Cents" debit handstamp, matching Liverpool (6.21) transit backstamp, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Jun. 24th to Boston arriving Jul. 7th, black "Boston Br. Pkt. '24' Jul 7" exchange debit cds (Blake 771); minor abrasion, Very Fine, ex-Hahn.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS U.S. CONSULATE AT QUEENSTOWN FORWARDER'S LABEL.

It is interesting to note that the letter is addressed to "Post Office Box 1776" in Boston.

1864 (Aug. 30) New York N.Y. to Edinburgh, Scotland, datelined folded letter sent unpaid from New York with black "N. York Br. Pkt. '5' " debit exchange cds to G.B., carried on Cunard Line Asia from Boston Aug. 31st to Queenstown arriving Sep. 11th, rated aboard ship by British postal clerk with "1/-" due handstamp, Edinburgh (2.13) arrival backstamp; fold soiling, F.-V.F., debit markings applied aboard ship are seldom seen, ex-Hugh Feldman.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sent via closed bag through Queenstown and Liverpool, and opened at Edinburgh, as was all the Scotland mail.

1864 (Dec. 14) London, England to Waldoboro Me., unpaid cover with "London E.C., DE 14, 64" cds and bold "3/Cents" debit handstamp to U.S., carried on Allen Line Peruvian from Liverpool Dec. 15th to Portland arriving Dec. 28th, "Portland Am. Pkt., '24 or 52 U.S. Notes" depreciated currency exchange cds, Very Fine and scarce Portland depreciated currency cds, ex-Arthur White.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Portland depreciated currency datestamp is unlisted in Allen & Littauer. It represents a very high depreciation rate, more than 50%.

1864 (Dec. 20) Maldon, England to Indianapolis Ind., datelined folded letter bearing G.B. 1862, 6d lilac (SG 96) horizontal pair tied by two strikes of "Maldon, DE 20, 64" duplex, red London (12.21) backstamp, carried on Collins Line Nova Scotian departing Liverpool Dec. 22nd to Portland arriving Jan. 4th, by rail to Detroit, red "Detroit Am. Pkt. '24 Paid' Jan 7" exchange cds; some edge splitting, F.-V.F., scarce Detroit exchange office use.

1865 (Jun. 16) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., blue datelined folded cover bearing G.B. 1865, 6d lilac, 1s green (SG 101, 97) tied by barred oval "15" cancels, red oval "Registered, London, 17 JU 65" oval datestamp and red crayon "645" registry number, carried on Cunard Line Cuba from Queenstown Jun. 18th to New York arriving Jun. 27th, light strike of red "Phila. Br. Pkt. '24 Paid' Jun 28" exchange cds, Very Fine, this is the latest reported use of this Philadelphia exchange office postmark, ex-Needs.
