Proprietary, 1873, $5 green & black, violet paper, manuscript "JHB, Feb 18/79 " cancel, rich vibrant colors not normally encountered on this issue, sharp crisp impression of fresh paper, trivial tiny thin spot at left, otherwise Very Fine, Scott catalog value with small faults, ex-Lyons, Mayer and Curtis; with 2016 P.S.E. certificate.

A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE $5 PROPRIETARY ISSUE ON VIOLET PAPER.

Only 74 examples of the $5 Proprietary on violet paper were ever issued. Due to the stamps size, the far majority of these issue have flaws to some extent. This stamp, with only a tiny thin, is by far one of the finest examples known.
