(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Pt. Isabel, Feb. 4. 1847, two-line postmark and matching "10" rating handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Camp Page Mouth Rio Grande, Jany. 30th 1847" to Oswego N.Y., interesting 3 page letter reading in part "…I only remained a short time at Point Isabel and then came here when I found the regiment and about six hundred recruits and volunteers encamped…Since then Genl. Worth with a large force of regulars have come down to near this place where they have formed a Camp called Palo Alto…The First Second & Third Infy. are at Tampico together with a Regiment of Artillery…" and continues with much military intelligence about troop movements etc., Very Fine.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Vera Cruz, Mexo Nov 5, two-line postmark (type II) and matching roman numeral "X" rating handstamp on folded letter datelined "Puebla, Oct 26 - 1847" to Middletown N.J., letter with excellent military content reading "I have just time to say a few words - as a regiment marches this morning en route to Puebla & Capt. De Hart and some of the sick affairs go down without expecting to get to Vera Cruz en route home…The chances of his getting to Vera Cruz are however doubtful. Gen. Lane marched with about 1500 men last Thursday to Atlixco - the present seat of Government of the State of Puebla - He met the advanced guard of Gen. Rhea about five miles out from this place and attacked him defeating him with just slaughter - our loss was only 3 men wounded - one of whom has since died. The Mexicans kep up a running fight to Atlixco - after being drawn from their position. It is reported here among the Mexicans that their Congress in session at Toluca have sent for Mr. Trist - desiring to reopen negotiations for peace…", a Very Fine use with excellent war content.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Vera Cruz, Mexico April 12, bold strike of framed postmark and matching "10" rating handstamp on blue folded letter endorsed "Puebla de Los Angeles, Mexico" at top left and datelined April 8th 1848 to Middletown Point N.J., interesting letter mentioning a recent death and some military matters plus "…We have just received a copy of the N.O. Delta containing an account of the Revolution in France, and the flight of Louis Philippi & the Royal family from Paris…", Very Fine.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Winfield Scott, manuscript "Winfield Scott, Major Genl." free frank endorsement on 1841 Adjutant Generals office folded letter to Troy N.Y., endorsed "Hd. Qrs. Army" and "A.G. Office" at top, entered mails with red "Washington D.C. Nov 5" cds and matching "Free" rating handstamp, letter concerns writer's son not being in the rolls of the Army, Very Fine, ex-Philip Ward Jr.

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was a United States Army General serving in the War of 1812, Mexican-American War and the Civil War, and an unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig Party in 1852. In 1855, by a special act of Congress, Scott was given a brevet promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, making him only the second person in U.S. military history, after George Washington, to hold that rank.
