"24" decimi due rating; partial bottom flap, otherwise Very Fine.

1862 (May 24) Bridgetown, Barbados to Philadelphia Pa., datelined folded letter by private ship, entered mails with "Philadelphia Pa Jun 12 1862" cds and matching "Ship" and "5" rating handstamps, additional pencil "7¢" in circle rating for 2¢ carrier delivery fee to street address, Very Fine and scarce ship letter showing carrier fee, ex-Arthur White.

New Orleans forwarders oval backstamp, black "New York '18' Nov 12" debit exchange cds, carried by Inman Line City of Manchester from New York Nov. 12th to Queenstown arriving Nov. 24, red Calais (11.25) entry cds, reverse with Paris (11.25) and Reims (11.26) arrival backstamps, "16" decimes due handstamp, Very Fine, A scarce Mexico transatlantic use sent through Union-Occupied New Orleans..

1866 (Jan. 11) Le Havre, France to New York N.Y., blue folded letter bearing France 80c rose, horizontal pair, trimmed at top, tied by dotted "1763" diamond cancel on 1861 blue folded letter to New York N.Y., bold "Le Havre, 11 Janv. 66" origin cds and small red "PD" framed handstamp with "6" cent credit handstamp adjacent, carried by French Ligne G pacquebot Washington departing Havre Jan. 13th to New York arriving Jan. 29th, two strikes of red "New York 'Paid 6' Jan 30" exchange cds; vertical file fold, F.-V.F., a scarce French packet use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This New York "Fr. Pkt." exchange cds is known used only between April 1865 and July 1867. Cover is prepaid 80c per 7½ grams with 3¢ per 7½ gram credit to the U.S. if carried by British or French packet.

"Agency Pacific Mail Steamship Company, San Francisco June 2, 1870", letter to E.W. Kingsley reading "After having seen for yourself the City of San Francisco, and observed the great commercial advantages as well as its importance not only to this Coast, but to our whole country; also having inspected the property of the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company, including their Steamers employed on the China route; I beg it consistent with your views of propriety that you will obtain the signatures of sich of the meinent gentlemen of your Hon. Board of Trade of Boston. [as would be willin to aid our Company in procuring an increase of subsidy] to a telegram addressed to the Hon. Wm. Twitchill. Chairman of the House Committee on Postal Service asking him to use his best efforts in furtherance of that object. Be assured Sir, I feel that the future control of the Asiatic trade, the command of the commerce of the Pacific and the supremacy of our Country's flag in this hemisphere depend on the success of the petition of this Company now before the Congress of the United States. An I deem its succress an object of such paramount greatness, as to justify me in seeking the iad of the excellent and substantial men, who now represent the noble City of Boston in California…Yours with Sincere regard, Oliver Eldridge", Very Fine and interesting letter concerning the PMSS contract.
