Lot 2056Mexico, Wells, Fargo & Co., Mazatlan, Mex., two strikes on part paste-up cover to New York City, dated "Sep 21" but awaited monthly ship until "Oct 3" departure when it received a second strike, handed over for local delivery with "Boyd's City Post, 39 Fulton St., Nov 10, 1865" cds, pencil "Nov 11, 1865" docketing; most of reverse removed from paste-up removal, F.-V.F., a scarce express and city local usage handled outside Mexican and US mail systems.

Mazatlan was under French control at this time, so this may explain why Wells Fargo chose not to use the U.S. mail system. The U.S. did not recognize the French government.
