This school is the predecessor to Vassar College, and was founded in 1861 by Matthew Vassar. It was the first degree-granting institution of higher education for women in the United States.

(Colleges and Schools) Virginia Military Institute, Superintendents Office, Lexington, Ky., all-over shaded Superintendent's Office ad design in orange on cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by blue "Lexington, Va., Jan 12" cds to Gen. James L. Kemper at Richmond, Va., docketed as from "F. H. Smith" at left; light soiling, Fine and rare design.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Francis Henney Smith (1812-1890) became the first Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute on its establishment in 1839, and held that post until shortly before his death. James Lawson Kemper (1823-1895) was a lawyer, a Confederate general in the American Civil War, and the 37th Governor of Virginia. He was the youngest of the brigade commanders, and the only non-professional military officer, in the division that led Pickett's Charge, in which he was wounded and captured but rescued.
