Wells, Fargo & Co. "Over Our California and Coast Routes." Blue Frank, at top center on fresh 1861, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, canceled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co's Express, Sacramento, Jan 25" cds, Extremely Fine, a choice and very rare blue frank usage with only two recorded usages on the 1861 entires.
Scott No. U35    Estimate $500 - 750.

It is speculated that the blue frank designated special carriage on the Sacramento River steamboats, because Wells Fargo's handstamped "Steamboat" markings cease to appear at just the time when the blue franks came into use.

Wells, Fargo & Co's Express, Rough & Ready., blue double-oval handstamp on part of front page of San Francisco Jan. 23rd 1856 "The Sun" newspaper, includes "Steamboats" section showing the Independent Opposition Line departure of the "Sea Bird".

Express, San Francisco, blue oval handstamp with matching oval "Paid" on 10¢ green (U18) buff Nesbitt entire to Sanbury Delaware, Oh., indicia cancelled by "New-York, Nov 29" cds, original letter datelined "San Francisco, Nov. 5, 1856" with some interesting content "…I shall not start this steamer as fare is high. I can go for half in the next steamer of 20th inst. as there is opposition going out at that time and are selling tickets at half prices…"; small edge tears and wear at top, partial flap, Fine, ex-Mader.

Express, San Francisco, blue oval handstamp tying 1851, 1¢ blue, type IV, horizontal strip of three (plate 1 late), mostly large margins, on 1855 folded letter to Sacramento Cal., letter indicates that four letters were enclosed, endorsed "P Wells Fargo & Cos Express, To be delivered immediately" at top; light file fold affecting uncanceled stamp in strip, still Very Fine, a rare early Wells, Fargo & Co. bearing a 1851 1¢ multiple, ex-Toaspern.
