Danish West Indies, 1800 (Apr. 16) St. Thomas to Newburyport, Mass. via Beverly, folded letter from the Moses Brown correspondence datelined "St. Thomas 16 April 1800", endorsed "By Capt. Molton, Beverly" at bottom left, entered mails with "Beverly May 17" postmark and matching "Sh 10" rating for 8¢ inland postage for under 40 miles plus 2¢ ship fee; some staining and wear, Fine and early ship letter to the United States.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This is one of the earliest Beverly Mass. ship letters, the earliest being 1795. This is the only the recorded letter from the Danish West Indies entering the United States at Beverly.

Danish West Indies, 1811 (Feb. 21) St. Kitts to Glasgow, Scotland via St. Thomas, datelined folded letter with small "St. Thomas, FE 27, 1811" fleuron postmark to Glasgow, Scotland, carried by Falmouth packet to Great Britain, manuscript "2/3" due rating for 1s1d packet fee plus 1s2d inland postage, faint strike of ½d Scottish toll road surcharge handstamp; some soiling, Fine.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

ONE OF ONLY SIX RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE SMALL "ST. THOMAS" FLEURON.

The small "St. Thomas" fleuron measures 29mm in diameter and was used only 1809 until 1811.

Danish West Indies, 1814 (Jan.) Barbados to London, England via St. Thomas, folded cover bearing "St. Thomas, Jan 28, 1814" large fleuron postmark, carried by packet to Great Britain, red London (5.8) arrival backstamp and manuscript "2/2" 2s2d due rating for 1s2d packet plus 1s inland postage, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The British occupied St. Thomas and St. Croix again in December 1807. They established a postal agency at St. Thomas in 1808 providing direct packet service to Great Britain.

Danish West Indies, 1842 (Feb. 22) St. Thomas to Edinburgh, Scotland, light gray folded cover clear strike of small green "St. Thomas" straightline with inverted "S", carried by Falmouth packet to Great Britain, red London (4.24) cds backstamp with manuscript "1/5" 1s5d due rating for the reduced 1s 3d packet rate plus 2d inland postage, a Very Fine strike.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE SMALL "ST. THOMAS" GREEN STRAIGHTLINE HANDSTAMP.

The green "St. Thomas" straightline markings were applied upon arrival at Falmouth on loose packets letters arriving from St. Thomas, and are only recorded during the 1840-41 period. Most letters during this period had the boxed "Packet Letter" markings.

Solomon & Co., Kingston, Jamaica" forwarder's double-oval, entered mails with Kingston (6.8) backstamp and Jamaica 4d vermilion tied by "A01" canceller, red crayon "4" pence credit, carried by RMSP Trent on Jamaica route departing Jun. 9th to St. Thomas arriving Jun. 12th, St. Thomas (6.12) transit backstamp, then by RMSP Teviot departing Jun. 17th to Guadeloupe, manuscript "30" centimes rating for local postage due, Fine and rare Caribbean transit mail.
