Cuba, 1827 (Nov. 13) Texcoco, Mexico to London, England via Havana, datelined folded letter with red "FRANCO EN / VERACRUZ" postmark and "7" Reales rating handstamp for 1¼oz. letter, carried by HMS Kingfisher via Havana - Bermuda - Halifax - Falmouth, London "F P O, FE - 1, 1828" backstamp and matching " '1¼' Oz at 12s/- per Oz" straightline handstamp with manuscript "15/" shilling due rating at top right, Very Fine, ex-Schimmer.

Cuba, 1839 (Oct. 19) Havana, Cuba to London, England, datelined folded letter endorsed "p. H.M.S. Packet Swift" at top, London (11.26) arrival backstamp, manuscript "9 / 3" 9s3d rating for triple rate crossed out, flap with "Only double, Fred Huth & C" notation, returned and original rating crossed out and ms. "3 / 1" 3s1d credit rating added, red "Rebate, Foreign Office, 28 Nov 28, 1839" rimless crown oval struck, Very Fine, ex-Forrester-Smith.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED USAGES FROM CUBA WITH A FOREIGN OFFICE REBATE HANDSTAMP.

Occasional letters were incorrectly overcharged and, when taken back to the post office for reassessment, were stamped with the special "REBATE" handstamp when refunding the incorrectly assessed amount.

Abad" forwarder's handstamp and fancy oily "CUBA" oval postmark, flap with sharp "St. Jago-De-Cuba, OC 12, 1842" cds, endorsed "Paquetes de Vapor de la Comp. Rs. Inglesa" at bottom left, privately carried to Boston, then by Cunard Line Britannia from Boston Nov. 1st to Liverpool arriving Nov. 16th, red London (11.19) arrival cds and "2/" shilling due rating, Very Fine.

Cuba, 1844 (Apr. 27) Santiago, Cuba to London, England via Jamaica, folded cover with red "Santiago, Isla de Cuba, 27 Abr. 1844" cds, sharp "Kingston, Jamaica, AP30 1844" double-circle backstamp and matching crisp "JAMAICA / SHIP LETTER" two-line handstamp, endorsed "per Steam Packet", missed the RMSP Co. packet and sent by private ship to London, red London (6.5) backstamp and manuscript "1/4" 1s4d due rating for double ship letter up to one ounce; light horizontal fold, Very Fine and choice, ex-Foster.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

THE ONLY RECORDED LETTER FROM CUBA TO GREAT BRITAIN SENT VIA JAMAICA, HIGHLIGHTED IN THE FOSTER BOOK.

This letter was illustrated and highlighted in the Foster book, but the rating was incorrectly explained by him.

Cuba, 1851 (Oct. 15) Chalon-S-Marne, France to Havana, Cuba, folded letter bearing France, 1849, Ceres, 1fr light carmine (9), pair and single, four margins, tied by diamond grids, matching "Chalon-S-Marne, 15 Oct 51" origin cds, red London Paid (10.17) transit cds, carried by RMSP Avori via St. Thomas (11.5), then by branch RMSP Conway to Havana, blue Nov. 15th arrival backstamp and matching "NE" and "2" reales due handstamp; minor erosion at right, Very Fine; with 2013 Roumet certificate.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Cuba, (1849 Treaty) 1859 (Feb. 28) Havana, Cuba to Edinburgh, Scotland via New York, datelined folded letter endorsed "per. am. Str. Cahawba via New York" at top, black "New-York, Br. Packet., Apr. 8" exchange backstamp and "10" debit handstamp to G.B., carried by Cunard Line "Canada" from New York to Liverpool, "Liverpool, Br. Packet" entry cds with matching rare "1/2½" due handstamp and "ART-2" backstamp, Edinburgh (3.22) arrival backstamp; soiling and wear, Fine and rare.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The "ART-2" handstamp was struck on unpaid letters from foreign countries transiting through the United States to Great Britain under the 1849 Treaty. The United States debited G.B. 10¢ for the steamship rate from Havana to New York.

Estimate    $300 - 400.

New York debited NGU 7¢ for transit fees from Cuba to New York. Letter sent in closed mail bag through England and Ostende to Cologne. Prussia marked 10 silbergroschen debit to Norway-Sweden post office for transit fees owed Prussia. Norway marked letter for 35 skilling postage due.
