Jun 5" cds with matching "Paid" in circle and "5" rating handstamps to Slabtown P.O., S.C., and last is U.S. 3¢ red (U10) buff Nesbitt entire cancelled by blue "Columbia S.C., Jan 8" cds to Capt. A.J. Green, Columbia Artillery at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan Island S.C., Very Fine trio.

Confederacy, (Tennessee) Chattanooga Ten., Oct 8, 1861, cds with matching "Paid 5" in Hexagon rating handstamp (CSA type A) on cover to Savannah Ga., manuscript "5 cts Pd" at top right; no flap and reduced slightly at top, F.-V.F.

The rim of of Type A marking was dented several times, resulting in an almost hexagon shape as illustrated below.

C.S.A. Catalog No. ATN-01    Estimate $150 - 200.

Cover is dated after the fall of Chattanooga to the Union (September 9th) during the time when the Chattanooga postmaster was traveling with the Army of Tennessee and using this handstamp to service the army mail.

I hope you will be able to recover the cost of it from the Confederacy…"; file fold barely affects 5¢, Very Fine.

Confederacy, (Tennessee) "Richland Sta Tn., July 6", manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 5" rating on orange cover to Stewarts Ferry Tenn., original letter datelined "Camp Trousdale, July 9, 1861" from J.P. Hamilton to his mother reading in part "…Great many sick here with the measles…We have blockaded the railroad here, and the cars pass up the road no further than this place - I do not know what the consequences will be - Ky. will act I think…Tell Sis I heard that John Clay was engaged in the hanging of a negro by mob law…I do not expect to come home anymore - Bloody fighting awaits us - We will have it to do - There will be no child's play affair - We will have to meet no Indians and Mexicans, but the true American - Our Kinsman and perhaps our friends in deadly conflict - I never expect to see home again should this war be protracted…", Very Fine with interesting content.
