Confederacy, Raleigh, N.C., 1861, 5¢ red, partly clear strike of red provisional handstamp, "5" crossed out in manuscript and bearing 5¢ Green, Stone 1 (1), four margins, tied by pretty red grid cancel, blue "Raleigh N.C. Dec 14 1861" cds on orange cover to Salem N.C., Very Fine, ex-Tate.

A FASCINATING COVER FRANKED WITH BOTH THE RALEIGH POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP AND A GENERAL ISSUE STAMP.

This is an unusual cover and a late appearance for the Raleigh Provisional. It seems that the sender or the Raleigh Post Office had the new stamps on hand by December 14 and simply used the provisional envelope as a matter of convenience.

Confederacy, Raleigh, N.C., 1861, 5¢ red, handstamped postmaster provisional with blue "Raleigh, N.C. Aug 12, 1861" cds, addressed to Dr. W. A. Holt in Graham, N.C.; tape-like adhesions at sides which could likely be carefully removed, F.-V.F.

Dr. William Alexander Holt (1828-1886) was born in Orange Co NC and received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was Asst Surgeon in the 27th NC Infantry early in the war and confirmed as Surgeon by the CS Senate in 1862. He served in various capacities and locations including the Board of Medical Examinations in both Raleigh and Goldsborough. Division or Brigade Surgeon for General W. D. Pender.

A GEM EXAMPLE OF THE RHEATOWN 5¢ POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL, ONLY ABOUT A DOZEN EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED.

The 5c provisional stamps issued by Postmaster D. Pence were printed by the same printer who produced the Tellico Plains Tenn. provisional. There are about a dozen recorded examples including a unique unused pair and five covers.

Confederacy, Thomasville, Ga., 1861, 5¢ black, bold strike of provisional handstamp and "Thomasville Ga., Oct 5" cds on orange cover forwarded to Savannah, original sent with "Augusta Ga., Oct 2" cds and matching light "Paid" and "5" rating handstamps to Captain Mitchel at Thomasville; reduced slightly at top, Very Fine and unusual use of provisional handstamp forwarding mail.

Confederacy, Walterborough, S.C., 1861, 10¢ carmine, unusually bold strike, matching "Walterborough S.C. Aug 29" cds on turned homemade cover Pleasant Valley Ala., readdressed to Jackson Miss., inside use addressed to Walterborough with 10¢ blue mostly torn away; small edge repair into top flap expertly done and unnoticeable, Very Fine; with clear 2016 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF ONLY SEVEN RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE WALTERBOROUGH 10¢ CARMINE HANDSTAMP PROVISIONAL, AND ONE OF THREE TURNED USES.

We recorded seven 10¢ carmine entires circa 1864 dated as follows: Jan. 15, Mar. 18, Apr. 15, May 16 (charge box notation), Aug. 29 (turned use, the cover offered here), Aug. 31 (turned use and charge box notation), and Nov. 9 (turned use).
