Confederacy, Point Lookout, Md., incoming small homemade cover addressed to Mr. Lawrence Clark, Fifth Division Co. B., bearing 10¢ blue (11) tied by "Tarboro N.C. Dec 4" cds, manuscript "By Flag of Truce" endorsement at top, red manuscript "18th Feby/65 Exchanged" and "(No. 99)", no United States postage, Very Fine and choice, ex-Judd, Kramer.

Confederacy, Point Lookout, Md., Incoming cover from Lynchburg Va. to prisoner-of-war Pvt. A. W. Saunders, a member of Company G of the 2nd Va. Cavalry, endorsed "(Via Flag Truce)" at bottom, endorsed at top "$5 U.S. Currency" and "ex." in same hand, mixed franking with C.S.A. postage paid by 10¢ blue (11), large margins, tied by blurry strike of green "Lynchburg Va. Oct 27" cds and U.S. postage paid by uncancelled 3¢ rose (65), uncancelled but tied by manuscript "17th Jan'y Exchanged" and "(No. 31)", also "Dep" in green pencil, Very Fine, ex-Judd, Birkinbine, Walske.

AN EXCEPTIONAL MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM LYNCHBURG TO A CONFEDERATE PRISONER AT POINT LOOKOUT WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN EXCHANGED.

Mixed frankings on prisoner-of-war covers are always desirable, especially so on South-to-North mail.

Confederacy, Point Lookout, Md., orange Prisoner of War cover addressed to Mrs. Mary Crist, Middlebrook Va. bearing for C.S.A. postage 10¢ blue (12), four margins, tied by "Richmond Va., Sep 29" cds, and for U.S. postage 3¢ rose (65) tied by target cancel duplexed with "Delaware City, Del, Sep" cds, framed "Prisoner's Letter, Sept. 6, 1864, Examined" handstamp, endorsed "via Flag of Truce" at lower left, original enclosed letter headed "Prisoners Camp Point Lookout Md. Sept. 5th/64" from Ezra Thomas Smith to his mother reading in part "…I am in tolerbly health at this time I have been crippled up with pains in my legs so that I can hardly walk but I am getting better…Direct to me prisoner of war Company E. 7th Division Point Lookout Maryland, via Flag of Truce, you can pay the postage with a bit of silver by sending it to richmond get the post master to fix it for you…", Very Fine.

Confederacy, Point Lookout, Md. (Camp Hoffman), U.S. 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by target with matching "Point Lookout, Md., Mar 7" cds and Confederate "Due 10" with "Richmond, Va., Apr 25" cds on 1864 prisoner of war cover to Mrs. Martha A.S. Riggins, Prince Edward Co House, Virginia, full bold strike of the large oval J. N. Patterson approved examiner's handstamp (Harrison Type 1) (CSA Catalog type PWH-16 A), Richmond cds is Powell type 5g which is not recorded as being used until May 1864 and this predates that, endorsed "From Jno J. Riggins Company F 18th Regt Va Infty", Very Fine, exceptionally nice strike of this popular and scarce examined marking, ex-Tickell.

The 18th Va Infantry was part of Garnett's Brigade, Pickett's Division. John J. Riggins was captured at Gettysburg 3 July 1863 during Pickett's Charge. He was held at Point Lookout but was paroled about a month after this cover was mailed. He rejoined his regiment and was captured a second time as a POW at Saylor's Creek, Virginia on 6 April 1865 and once again confined at Point Lookout until his release on 17 June 1865.

Confederacy, Rock Island Barracks (Rock Island, Ill.), inbound money letter cover to prisoner John W. Howell in "Barracks 43", franked with 1863, 10c blue + U.S., 1861 3c rose (defective) both left uncanceled, manuscript "$5 U.S. Currency" with erasure of pencil "Through the lines" endorsement above, pencil "ex" examiner's marking below stamps and light "C" in red crayon indicating cover containing currency; cover reduced and with erasures (cleaning) at left, F.-V.F.; with detailed biography & 1999 C.S.A. certificate.
