New Zealand, Paid at Nelson, New Zealand, clear strike of red crown circle handstamp on 1848 folded letter to Tewkesbury, England, manuscript "The Eden leaves the London Docks June 3rd for Nelson" endorsement and "1/-" rate, reverse with "Nelson, Ju 7, 1848" origin, red London entry and receiving backstamps, Very Fine.

New Zealand, Paid at Petre, New Zealand, sharp full strike of red crown circle handstamp on folded letter sheet to Wellington, red crayon "4" rating and "Wellington, Sp 3, 1859" receiving postmark, reverse with "Petre, Sp 1, 1859" origin date stamp, Very Fine and choice, one of the finest strikes of this rare handstamp.

New Zealand, Paid at Port Victoria, New Zealand, clear sharp strike of red crown circle handstamp on cover to London, England, manuscript "2" local rating and blue "d6" packet rate handstamp, reverse with matching "Australian Packet, Liverpool, Ju 30, 55" transit cds, "Port Victoria, Mr 17, 1855" origin backstamp; light wax seal stain at center, otherwise Very Fine, this crown circle only exists with the local rate in manuscript applied on top of strike.

New Zealand, 1848 Edinburgh, Scotland to Nelson, New Zealand, slightly reduced ship letter front endorsed "private ship Blundell" at top with manuscript "Pd 8d" and "9" ratings, red Edinburgh and London transit datestamps, clear strike of the extremely rare "Otakou, New Zealand, Se 18, 1848" oval datestamp and partial Nelson arrival cds; sealed tear at top, F.-V.F.; with 2014 Odenweller certificate.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

THE FINER OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE "OTAKOU" HANDSTAMP IN PRIVATE HANDS.

The Otago settlers did not approve of the name Otakou and on December 26, 1848 it was changed to Otago.
