New Zealand, 1865, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 4d yellow, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, in combination with 1864, 6d red brown, perf 12½, Large Star watermark on cover to Bolton Le Moors, England, tied by "Dunedin, Au 31, 70" duplex postmarks, with manuscript "Via Suez and Marseilles" endorsement and clear strike of the rare boxed "Insufficiently Paid/For Brindisi Route/Deficient Postage/"Due 3"" handstamp, forwarded to Blackpool with partial Bolton cds on reverse; cover edge wear repaired cover opening at left, F.-V.F., illustrated in the R.P.S.N.Z. handbook (volume VII, page 59), the only other cover recorded with this handstamp was in the John Woolfe sale in 2006, ex-McNaught & Ellott; with 2014 Odenweller certificate. ONE OF ONLY TWO COVERS RECORDED FROM NEW ZEALAND WITH THIS DEFICIENCY HANDSTAMP.

The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War on July 15, 1870 resulted in difficulties with the route through France, and from September to November of that year mail to Europe endorsed "via Marseilles" was diverted to the route via Brindisi. The September and October mails from New Zealand were surcharged 3d per half-ounce on delivery in the United Kingdom, where an explanatory handstruck marking was applied. This was the rate difference in charges in the United Kingdom for letters sent by the alternative routes, though for letters from New Zealand the actual rate difference was 5d per half-ounce

New Zealand, 1865, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 4d yellow, perf 12½, horizontal pair, Large Star watermark, tied by "Dunedin, Au 20, 67" cds and barred oval duplex on reverse of cover to Melun, France forwarded to Paris, carried per Bombay departing Sydney August 24th and arriving at Marseilles November 12th, various French transit and forwarding date stamps including red "Pass Ang V Suez, An A Mar, 12 Oct, 67" on front, Very Fine, the rate had been reduced to 8d on June 1st, 1867, ex-"Antipodes" & Benvie; with 2014 Odenweller certificate. New Zealand, 1865, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 4d pale yellow, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, in combination with 1864, 6d brown, perf 12½, Large Star watermark on cover to Golspie, Scotland, tied by bold "Dunedin, Mr 21, 67" cds and barred "O" duplexes, "Via Marseilles and Suez" routing endorsement and "Golspie, My 13, 1867" receiving backstamp, Very Fine, scarce with little mail sent via Suez during the Panama contract period; with 2014 Odenweller certificate. Campbell Paterson Nos. A4b (1)+A5h (5).
SG Nos. 120 var.+122a    Estimate $500 - 750.

The Panama line S.S. "Otago" carried the New Zealand mail to Melbourne from Port Chalmers for mail to be carried on the P&O Line. Sailed that day (March 21st) from Otago, with the mails for Great Britain via Marseilles, per Melbourne. The via Panama mail left Sydney via Wellington where the NZ mail left on April 8th, arriving in Great Britain on May 26th.

New Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d red brown, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, fine single tied by manuscript "HoHo, 16/6/67" postmark on cover to Stroud, England, manuscript "via Panama" routing endorsement at top, reverse with "Hokitika, My 16, 67" origin, "Christchurch, My 23" transit and receiving backstamps; small cover tear at top and small portion of backflap missing, F.-V.F., sent on the first voyage of the Kaikora.
