Wells, Fargo & Co., Sac. City, Aug. 30, clear strike of blue oval date stamp on 3¢ red (U9) Nesbitt entire to Stockton, Cal. with blue Wells Fargo & Co. company frank at top; partial backflap, Very Fine, a choice example of this scarce frank, ex-Hackett.

Wells Fargo & Co., Sac. City, Mar 4, double oval date stamp (Leutzinger type 11-5) on 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, with Blue Company Printed Frank at top, Very Fine and choice.

Controversy still exists over the significance of the "Blue Franks". Many believe that it was a steamship frank, as they came into existence when the steamship cancels disappeared in 1854, while others have conjectured that they may have denoted a special service.

Wells Fargo & Co., Express, Sacramento, blue oval handstamp on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Sonora, with Blue Company Printed Frank at top left, Very Fine, a very scarce special company frank on a 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

It is speculated that the blue frank designated special carriage on the Sacramento River steamboats, because Wells Fargo's handstamped "Steamboat" markings cease to appear at just the time when the blue franks come into use.

Wells Fargo & Co., Sonoma, Express, blue oval handstamp canceling on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Emil Dresel in Sonoma, with red Jacob Gundlach, Bavaria Brewer, San Francisco allover shaded ad, company frank and 1861 docketing at left; central file fold, otherwise Very Fine, Dresel was the former partner of Charles Kuchel in a San Francisco lithography business which produced many California birds-eye views.
