Greenfield Mo., red cds cancels 3¢ red (U10) buff Nesbitt entire to Jefferson City Mo., forwarded with sharp complete strike of red "Jefferson City, Mo. Jan 17" cds and bearing 3¢ orange brown (10), strong color, cancelled by pen strokes, Very Fine and scarce orange brown use from Missouri.

Jefferson City Mo. "Jan 21", cds with manuscript dating and matching "Paid" handstamp with ms. "Paid 12½" rating on 1835 folded letter to the land office at Chilicothe Mo. signed from future Governor Thomas Reynolds, minor file fold toning, Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Thomas Reynolds (1796-1844) was the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court as well as the seventh Governor of Missouri (1840-44). He is notable for being one of the few American politicians to die by suicide while in office.

"Mt Hope, August 30th", manuscript postmark with matching "25" cent rating 1840 to South Reading Vt., forwarded with blue "So Reading Vt, 25 Sept" postmark and matching "forwdg 6" rating totaled to "31" cents, interesting letter reads in part "…I have traveled in a number of counties in this state and can say that I am very much pleased with the situation of it. The mighty Mississippi River washes its eastern boundary then through the interior is the Muddy Missouri bringing the remains of the ages from the Rocky Mountains. The natural resource of this state are not excelled by any other in the Union…I am teaching the young military drill and hot to fire…I have two classes one in Boonville and one in Arrow Rock 100 miles below this…The state is rapidly settling up and there is an abundance of government land yet for a dollar and a quarter per acre…", Very Fine.
