"Prairie du Chien M.T., Jany. 16", manuscript postmark with matching "25" rating on folded letter datelined "Fort Snelling, January 1, 1829" to Albany N.Y.; some edge wear, Very Fine.

Letter carried by military express to Prairie du Chien, Michigan Territory taking 16 days. The Fort, then located in unorganized territory at the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Anthony Rivers. This January 1, 1829 marking precedes the date shown in Minnesota Territory by Floyd Risvold by five months.
