Lot 3186    

Everts, Wilson & Co.'s Daily Express, red fancy frame printed frank with "Overland Via Los Angeles" lined out, on 10¢ green (U15) entire to Mobile Ala., "Due 10" handstamp, red "Portsmouth Va." cds, straightline "Advertised" handstamp; restored, Very Fine appearance.

In late 1856, Frank Everts, James Wilson, and Frank's brother formed Everts, Wilson & Co. Daily Express. They operated daily from Rabbit Town, whose name was changed to La Porte in Oct. 1857. From this location they served the Gibsonville Ridge region and parts of Sierra County north of North Fork of the Yuba River and south of the North Fork of the Feather River. They maintained offices at Marysville, La Porte, Gibsonville, Saint Louis and Nelson Creek. They had various connections including Pacific Express until 1857, and Wells Fargo after, as well as the U.S. mails.

Lined out on this special frank is "OVERLAND Via Los Angeles, which refers to the Butterfield Overland Mail; thus it was used after the demise of Butterfield in 1861.

Farley's Express, double-framed handstamp with manuscript "Ina Creek" designation for Indian Creek, on cover to Burnham Me., entered mails with "Camptonville Cal., Nov 17" cds with "Paid" and circled "10" rating handstamps; repaired faults, ex-Clifford.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE FARLEY'S EXPRESS HANDSTAMP WITH MANUSCRIPT INDIAN CREEK DESIGNATION.

George S. Farley operated from a base at Camptonville Cal. He ran express service from Camptonville to the mining camps at Indian Creek and Young's Hill in the Yuba County area. He used the Camptonville post office for connections. It is reported he had a number of drop boxes attached to trees at different locations along streams that he would check as he made his rounds on his express runs.

Ford & Co.'s Express, green circle and star handstamp on flap of orange buff cover to Brunswick Me., entered the mails with red "Sacramento City, Cal., Apr 21" cds and matching large "40" rate handstamp; flap patched slightly affecting handstamp, Very Fine, ex Dale-Lichtenstein.

Francis & Co.'s Express, red fancy paid frank on 3¢ red (U27) buff star die entire cancelled by "La Porte Cal., Jul 26" cds to Secret Ravin Cal., blue "Wells, Fargo Co., Marysville, Jul 21" double-oval datestamp; reduced slightly at right, some edge wear, Very Fine, WC8246, ex Dale-Lichtenstein.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS RED FRANCIS & CO.'S EXPRESS FRANK.

Robert Francis and James S. Bump formed Francis & Co's that was based in Gibsonville. From that location they ran to La Porte, Onion Valley and Nelson Point. They connected with several firms including Wells Fargo at Marysville. It is reported that Charles Nelson was employed to carry express mail during the winter months by snow skies. The express was sold to Holland, Morley & Co. in May 1862.

Lot 3192    

Freeman & Cos. Express, perfect strike of red double-oval handstamp of Sacramento on complete The Daily Index newspaper of Sacramento City Feb. 13th 1851, manuscript "Courier", contains several advertisements of express companies including Freeman's, Palmer's, Gregory's, Haven & Co., Adams', Dodge & Co., etc., plus ad for passage to New Orleans "Via the Isthmus of Tehuantepec", and back page is the discussion of California postal routes; file folds, Very Fine.

When Adams Express collapsed in February 1855, John Freeman was their agent in Panama. He quickly formed a partnership with Joseph Hedden, John Hoey and John E. Stiman and purchased from the eastern firm of Adams Express Co. his old interest in the New York and California business as Freeman & Co's New York and California Express. He established routes between New York and California over both the Panama Isthmian and Nicaragua. He expanded internationally in Australia, South America and Canada. In 1855, they established offices in interior California at many towns and mining camps that lasted until November 1859. At the end of 1860, they sold out to Wells Fargo.

John Sandifer Gregory and Joseph R. English ran a service that consisted of a stage and a pony run from Nevada City Cal. to Lake City, North Bloomfield, Moore's Flat, Woolsey's Flat, Orleans Flat an Eureka South. They connected with Wells Fargo at Nevada City and with Jefferis' Saddle Train for the movement of express material to the mines at Meadow Lake Cal. Gregory sold his interest to Wells in June 1868.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS FANCY D.W. HARRIER'S EXPRESS FRANK.

Operated from a base in Nevada City, Harrier's connected with Wells Fargo at that location. D.W. Harrier used his express to serve the mining camps between Nevada City, Moore's Flat and North Bloomfield.
