1897, 1¢ Black on Buff, Plate Proof, Plate proof on smooth wove buff card with pencil notation across top of card "From 3d Asst. P. M. General Merritt, Dec. 9/97", accompanied by letter datelined "Dec 9" 1897" with blue "Post Office Department, Office of the Third Assistant Postmaster General, Washington D.C." imprint reading, "My Dear Mr Hoover, I omitted inadvertently to you before leaving Lockport one of the few Postal Cards per my promise. I therefore herewith hand you proof of same. Of course you understand this must not be sent through the mail via correspondence as the cards are not yet issued, Very Respectfully, John A. Merritt", Very Fine and unique plate proof with letter documentation. Scott No. UX14P.

1897, 1¢ Black on Buff, originally cancelled by New York machine cancel, damaged by the post office with blurry strikes of "Accidentally Mutilated" handstamps in black and purple, two Official Seals (OX7) affixed to repair card and cancelled by "New York, Jun 16 '99" duplexes to Springfield Mass., Fine and scarce official seal repaired use.
