Port Lavaca / Tex Feb, 9th 1848, two-line postmark with manuscript "Paid 10" rating on gray folded letter to Baltimore Md., original paid rating crossed out, blue manuscript "Advertising 2" and "Forwarding 5" ratings totaled to "7" for sending to Dublin, blue "Baltimore Md. Apr 14" cds; some wear and bottom right edge fault, F.-V.F. and unrecorded straightline Port Lavaca postmark.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Port Lavaca Post Office first opened on November 30, 1846. There were only a few people in the new community served by the Morgan steamships. Letter is from P.H. Lindsay to his cousin about the settlement of Port Lavaca, his work as a brick-maker, and his travels in Texas.

Port Lavaca Tex. Oct 5, 1848, 23mm cds with year set with name and matching "5" rating on folded cover to Seguin Tex., some wear and aging, Fine; with 1992 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Cover is from the correspondence of Andrew Nelson Erskine, who was a Texas Ranger under John Coffee "Jack" Hays at the age of 17, a surveyor in Seguin in 1846, and a CSA Officer killed at Antietam in 1862.

Thomson, Abilene Tex. bearing 10¢ brown (209) just tied by manuscript cancel, purple "Ret'd to Writer" straightline and partial "Abilene, Tex, Oct 3, 1888" cds, original jury summons enclosure for the indictment of the famed Marlow Brothers of rustling and murder; cover reduced at right, Fine and scarce use associated with the famed Marlow Brothers, ex-Bleuler.

(Virginia) Smithfield Va. "Mar 7", clear strike of negative oval postmark with manuscript "Mar 7" dating and matching "Paid 12½" rating on 1837 folded letter, a Very Fine strike.

Smithfield was the site of a tobacco warehouse as early as 1633 and is known for curing hams.
