1855 (June 14) Hamburg, Germany to Colima, Mexico via New York, blue folded cover in care of New York forwarder with red "Hamburg, Paid, Jun 14, 1858" cds and matching "10" rating handstamp, overwritten by blue crayon "6", carried transatlantic by Hapag Borussia from Hamburg Jun. 15th to New York arriving Jun. 30th, red "N. York Hamb. Pkt., Paid, Jul 1" exchange arrival cds, remailed with 10¢ green, type II (32) tied by bold "New York, Oct 5" ocean mail grid cds to Aspinwall, across Isthmus, then by P.M.S.S. to Acapulco, entered mails with "ACAPULCO" straightline and matching bold "2" reales inland postage due to Colima, Panama, endorsement updated to "p Steamer Moses Taylor"; some ink erosion, otherwise Very Fine.

1855 (Sep. 7) San Salvatore, Kingdom of Sardinia to San Francisco, Cal., folded letter with "S. Salvatore, 8 Set 55" dcds and prepaid manuscript "170" rating on reverse, additional "P.P./S. Salvatore" handstamp, endorsed "Via London", Torino (9.9) backstamp, red Pt. de Beauvoisin (9.12) transit cds, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Sep. 15th to Boston arriving Sep. 28th, "Boston Br. Packet 29 Sep" exchange cds and matching "10" cent due rating, docketed as received "Oct 30/55", Very Fine, a scarce British Open mail rate to California, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter went overland via Turin and Pt. de Beauvoisin to Paris and England where it was placed on Cunard steamer to Boston, then traveled by steamship from New York to Aspinwall and Panama to San Francisco. Letter was prepaid 1L 70 centisimi for all transit fees by French and British open mail to U.S. Boston marked 10¢ postage due, the British Open mail rate by British packet from West Coast.

Packet, Sep 5" with pencil "45" cent rating at lower left and red manuscript "24" credit rating to G.B., carried by Collins Line Pacific departing New York Sep. 5th to Liverpool arriving Sep. 15th, partial red London (9.17) transit cds, reverse with bold Plymouth (9.18) double-arc transit; top edge tear, Fine and rare use.

Pkt., Sep 3" exchange datestamp and manuscript "9" due rating for 4¢ plus 5¢ inland due rating, Very Fine and rare.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS SCARCE SOLDIER'S CONCESSIONARY RATE FROM INDIA TO THE UNITED STATES.

Unpaid soldier's letter from Private Jeremiah Ryan, 2nd company, 2nd Regiment, Bombay European Light infantry. Letter entitled to British military concessionary rate with appropriate endorsement and signature of company officer, and appropriately signed by the Major commanding. London marked 2d due, the unpaid concessionary rate to the U.K. and passed this on as 4¢ debit to U.S. New York added 5¢ for U.S. inland fees and marked the letter for 9¢ postage due. This was the only way an unpaid letter could be sent from India to the U.S. for only 9¢.

Includes typed 1951 letter from Ashbrook to Philip Ward explaining the lack of an exchange marking and notation of postage paid.

Pkt. '30' Oct 25" debit exchange cds, Very Fine and scarce use via Boston to California.

This cover was forwarded via the Aachen exchange office and British packet at the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate (5¢ U.S. inland, 18¢ sea and British transit, 2¢ Belgian inland (blue manuscript. "2") and 5¢ Prussian).

"f11" ratings on reverse, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Jun. 20th to Boston arriving Jul. 1st, bold red "Boston 'Paid 30' Br. Pkt.
