1857, 1¢ blue, type IIIa, used with 1¢ blue, type II (20), guideline s.e. at left, and 3¢ dull red (26), tied by fancy star cancels, matching "Downieville Cal., Jul 16, 1861" cds on 10¢ green (U33) star die entire to Galt, Canada West at the 15¢ West Coast rate, red "Chicago, Ill, Paid 15" circular exchange handstamp, additional magenta "Paid 15" credit rating, Galt (8.8) arrival backstamp; 1¢ stamps small tears, opening flaws at left and edge wear, a Very Fine and striking use.

1857, 1¢ blue, type IIIa, plate 4, intense color, tied by neat "Detroit, Mich. May 4, 1858" cds on unsealed buff cover to Ypsilanti Mich., original Hiram Walker's Vinegar printed circular; 1¢ slight gum toning, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Ebach; with 2012 P.S.A.G. certificate.

1857, 1¢ blue, type V, used with three 3¢ dull red (26) singles, tied by open circular grid cancels, matching "Sault de St. Marie, Mich. Mar 4" cds and "U States" in arc framed handstamp on 1861 folded letter to London, Upper Canada, red Canadian "U. States 10" credit marking, London (3.19) arrival backstamp; file fold do not affect stamps, Very Fine.

1857, 3¢ rose, type II, strip of four, position. 46-47-48-49L3, tied by two strikes of "Augusta Me., Apr 12" cds on legal-size buff cover to Salem Mass., 1858 docketing at left, F.-V.F. and rare type II strip used on cover, ex-Wyer.
Scott No. 25A    $4,150 + as strip of 3 & single.

The strip contains pos. 49L3, which is the one extra vertical line outside of left frame line variety that carries a premium of $200.

Lot 547    

1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, cracked plate, position 71L18 which clearly shows large plate crack extending through the entire width of the stamp, deep rich color, tied by "Washington City D.C. Jan" cds on cover to Portsmouth N.H.; flap tear, Very Fine, a scarce on cover usage of this cracked plate variety, ex-Cochrane.

1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, two pairs and single, couple with framelines doubled, all tied by "Brownsville Tex., Dec" cds's on yellow cover to France, black "New York, Dec 19" exchange cds and red "Short Paid" framed handstamp, Calais (1.9) entry cds and matching "16l decimes due handstamp; small flaws, bottom back flap replaced, Very Fine appearing, a scarce Texas transatlantic use.

1857, 3¢ dull red, type IV, cover collection, group of 11 covers and 1 front, all with single frankings, some interesting varieties including damaged transfers, double transfer and double frame line at right (71R11), recut rosettes, left frameline double at left, position. 88R10E with recutting slip, etc.; some mixed condition, F.-V.F. and scarce group.

1859, 5¢ brown, type I, horizontal strip of three, some scissor trimmed perfs at bottom, tied by two strikes of "New Orleans La., Jul 5, 1860" cds on blue folded cover to France, sharp red "New York 'Paid 12' Jul 10" credit exchange cds, French "Et. Unis Serv. Br. A.C." (7.23) entry cds and red framed "P.D." handstamp, Castillon (7.24) arrival backstamp, a Very Fine use.
