Faber's Lead Pencils, New York, green allover shaded ad on cover to Columbia, S.C., franked with U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "Charleston, S.C., Paid, Mar 1, 1861" cds, manuscript "Missent" and "Camden, S.C., Mar 2" forwarding cds; couple small cover tars at top, still Very Fine, an attractive and rare Union ad cover and Confederate States combination usage.

Confederacy, (Waterway) Nashville & New Orleans Passenger Packet Red Rover, Wm. Strong, Master, gray shaded ad design with all but vessel name crossed out and manuscript "C.S. Steamer" added, on cover addressed to Mrs. Louisa S. Guthrie in Portsmouth, Va., with manuscript all in the hand of Lt. John J. Guthrie C.S.N. commander of the "Red Rover", franked with 1861, 10¢ dark blue, Hoyer tied by "Columbus, Ky." cds; light allover soiling and cover slightly reduced at right, F.-V.F., illustrated in Milgram's waterway book (page 595). Milgram No. 1169.

A UNIQUE USAGE OF A PASSENGER PACKET ADVERTISING COVER MODIFIED DURING ITS CONFEDERATE NAVAL PERIOD BY THE COMMANDER OF THE "RED ROVER".

The "Red Rover" was a side-wheel steamer built in 1859 and purchased by the Confederacy in November of 1861. Initially, she was put her to use as a barracks ship for the floating battery at New Orleans. Later, she served in defending Columbus, Ky. where this cover was mailed. In March of 1862, at Island No. 10 near New Madrid, Missouri, she was holed by Union fire during a bombardment of that island, leading the Confederates to abandon her as a barracks ship. After refitting the vessel, the Union used it as a hospital ship.

Confederacy, Advertising & Illustrated Cover Balance, 1860-90's, of 17 covers; mostly allover merchant ads with nice bearing frankings, three stampless usages and two hand-carried including a Adams Express Company illustrated showing horse and rider alongside train, also includes are two 7-Star Flag allover patriotics franked with U.S. 1857, 3¢ red brown and both tied by Memphis, Ten. cds and four unused allover flag design; condition is mixed, Fine appearance.
Estimate    $2,500 - 3,500.
