1857, 10¢ green, type IV, position 64L1 (recut at top & bottom), red town and "Short Paid" cancels, choice centering with recuts clearly visible, rich deep color, Extremely Fine, with only four graded higher in the grade of 95; with 1987 P.F., 1999 and 2003 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF 90, SMQ $6,000).

1859, 10¢ green, type V, tied by large blue segmented cork cancel, matching "Marysville Cal., Apr 19" cds on orange cover to East Avon N.Y. with printed "Overland Via Placerville & Salt Lake." illustrated six-horse stagecoach design and Randal & Co. of Marysville imprint, "Placerville & Salt Lake Butterfield" directive crossed out and updated to "Los Angeles & St. Louis", Very Fine, ex-West, Knapp.

1860, 30¢ orange, rich color, used with 5¢ orange brown, type II (30), pulled perf at top, and 10¢ green (35), all tied by three strikes of red NYFM circular grids and matching "New York 'Paid 9' Sep 14" credit exchange cds on 1861 blue folded letter from the Payen correspondence to Lyon, France, carried as endorsed by Havre Line Arago from New York Sep. 14th to Havre arriving Sep. 27th, Havre (9.27.61) octagon arrival, reverse with Paris (9.28) transit and Lyon (9.29) arrival backstamps, Very Fine, ex-Newbury, Sevenoaks; with 1976 P.F. certificate.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE THREE-COLOR 1857 ISSUE FRANKING WITH THE 5¢ ORANGE BROWN FROM THE PAYEN CORRESPONDENCE TO FRANCE.

The 5¢ orange brown was issued in 1861, just prior to demonetization. In period usages are rare.
