Mexico, 1866, Eagle (5th Period), ½r lilac, Mexico, cons 1-1866, o.g., hinge remnant, bright color, Very Fine and choice; with 2018 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
Scott No. 20c    Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY KNOWN MINT EXAMPLE OF THE 1866 ½ EAGLE ISSUE FROM THE FIFTH PERIOD -A GREAT EAGLE ISSUE RARITY.

This issue is only known from two consignments, 1-1866 and 17-1866 (both Mexico districts). It is believed that only 400 where sent in 1866. About ten used examples are known of which most are faulty.

Mexico, 1866, Eagle (5th Period), ½r lilac, Mexico, cons 1-1866, Mexico town cancel, ample to mostly large margins, crease and thin, Very Fine appearance, except for 400 lilacs divided between consignments 1 and 17, all 1866 medios are gray, with a low survival rate, these "Fifth Period Lilacs" are very rare - around ten used example are known all having some sort of fault, this is probably the finest looking example of this important rarity, having big even margins.

Mexico, 1866, Eagle (5th Period), ½r gray, Guadalajara-Zapotlan, two singles, 51-1866, sub 11, in combination with 1866, Eagle (5th Period), 2r orange, cons 92-1866, sub 11 on folded letter to Guadalajara, tied together by Zapotlan handstamp (Schatzkes 442), Very Fine, the Eagles were demonetized on August 1st, the gray Eagles are very scarce on cover.
