1852, 3¢ dull red, type II, block of five, positions 6-7/16-17/27L1L, large margins to just in including top sheet margin, cancelled by clear strikes of "Steam" handstamps and tied by light strike of red "New Orleans La. Jan 13" cds on 1855 inbound legal-size buff cover, routing instructions at bottom left partly under stamps, docketed at right; few small faults including position 16 tear at left and bottom right stamp small piece out at bottom right, cover reduced at right, Fine and unusual quintuple-rate use.

1856, 5¢ red brown, large margins all around, tied by "New Orleans La. Nov 16" cds on 1856 blue folded cover originating in Vera Cruz, Mexico to Bordeaux, France, neat "Vera Cruz 9 Novbae 1856" origin backstamp, endorsed "Via U.S." at top, blue "Forwarded by E.J. Forstal" oval backstamp, red "New York Br. Pkt. Nov 26" cds, carried by Cunard Line Europa, that departed New York Nov. 26th to Liverpool arriving Dec. 8th, red London (12.8) transit backstamp, Calais (12.9) entry cds and "13" decime due handstamp, Bordeaux (12.11) arrival backstamp; missing bottom flap, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Grunin, Mayer, Eubanks; with 2006 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 5¢ 1856 ISSUE USED ON COVERS ORIGINATING OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES.

The other recorded use of the 5¢ on a cover originating outside of the United States was sent from Mexico in February 1857 (ex-Hubbard and Mayer).

1856, 5¢ red brown, A Relief from the top row of the plate, three large margins, just touched at left, tied by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express Sac. City, Dec 12" double-oval datestamp on legal-size orange buff cover to Marysville Cal. with printed black Wells, Fargo & Co. frank, additional strike of cancel on frank, pencil "this too heavy, DeKay collect on this", manuscript signed, 1859 date at bottom, intact Wells, Fargo wax seal on back; some slight edge wear, expertly restored at left where irregularly opened, Very Fine appearance, ex Dale-Lichtenstein, Eubanks; with 2006 P.F. certificate prior to restoration.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED WELLS, FARGO & COMPANY EXPRESS COVERS WITH THE 5¢ 1856 ISSUE.

The other Wells Fargo Express use bearing the 5¢ 1856 issue was used from San Francisco in 1857.

1856, 5¢ red brown, large margins all around, faint crease at bottom in margin only, tied by "Nauvoo Ills. Aug 20" cds, used with 10¢ green (15), cancelled by manuscript and tied by manuscript mark indicating double weight on 1857 folded letter to France, red "SHORT PAID" handstamp, 5¢ tied by "New York '6' Sep 2" debit cds, carried on Cunard Line Arabia that departed New York Sep. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Sep. 13th, magenta "15" rate crossed out by two strikes of "16" decimes handstamps, French entry cds and strike cancels 5¢, Lucon (9.16) arrival backstamp; address lightened, Very Fine appearance, This is the only recorded use of a "Short Paid" marking on a 5¢ 1856 Issue cover., ex-Patrick Henry, Mayer, Hackmey, Eubanks; with 2006 P.F. certificate.

Jul 15" cds; slight cover wear, Very Fine and attractive forwarded use, ex-Pearce, Jessup, Eubanks.

1851, 12¢ gray black, large margins except just in at top, tied by New York grid cancel on folded cover to Havana, Cuba and forwarded to Matanzas, carried as endorsed by American Packet Empire City to Havana where blue "NA" (ties 12¢) for North America origin and matching "2" and "1" due handstamps, light strike of March 1852 Havana backstamp; light toning bands at sides, otherwise Very Fine and scarce use to Cuba; with 2001 P.F. certificate.
