Confederacy, (West Virginia) Martinsburg (West) Va., Oct 3, cds with matching "Paid" and "5" rating handstamp on orange cover to Charleston (West) Va., Very Fine and scarce West Virginia CSA use, ex-Walcott.
C.S.A. Catalog No. B; $300    Estimate $200 - 300.

Martinsburg is in Berkeley County which would later bottom right incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in 1863. This cover was sent entirely within West Virginia as Charleston is in Jefferson County.

Confederacy, (West Virginia) Romney (West) Virginia, Jun 27, bold cds with matching bold straight line "Paid" and "5" rate handstamps on folded cover on lined paper to Richmond Va.; light staining, Very Fine strikes, ex-Walcott.
C.S.A. Catalog No. A; $500    Estimate $200 - 300.

Very few Confederate stamps reached West Virginia, so most covers originating there were handstamped. Romney in Hampshire County is said to have changed hands 56 times during the war.

Lot 1980    

Confederacy, (West Virginia) "Trav Repose, Va, Nov 8" (West Virginia), manuscript postmark with with matching cross-hatch canceling 5¢ green (1) on orange cover to Breckenridge Va.; edge wear, F.-V.F. and scarce use from this small town.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Traveler's Repose was a confederate encampment at the famous Inn and Tavern on the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike. The Confederate Army was camped here during the Winter of 1861-62. In the Spring of 1862, they pulled back to Staunton Va.

Confederacy, (West Virginia) White Sulphur Springs, Va., Nov 10, cds with "Due 5" rating on buff cover to Meadows of Dan, Patrick Co., Va., sender's "Abram C. Pendleton, Floyds Brigade, Fiftieth Va. Regiment" military endorsement at top; light soiling and small erosion spot bottom left, F.-V.F., a scarce West Virginia usage.
