Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaiian Is., Feb. 26, 1851, exquisite sharp bold strike of two-line date stamp in black (MH 201, scarcity 2) on cover from Rev. Damien to Mary Seeley in Danbury, Ct., with red "San Francisco, Cal., Apr 1" cds and red crayon "42" rating for the 40¢ transcontinental rate plus the ship captain's fee of 2¢, Very Fine.
Estimate    $10,000 - 15,000.

AN EXCEPTIONAL STRIKE OF THE HONOLULU STRAIGHT LINE POSTMARK IN BLACK.

This cover was carried aboard the "Louisa Baille", which departed Honolulu on February 26th and arrived in San Francisco on March 25th. Then carried aboard the "Tennessee" from San Francisco to Panama on April 1st.

Hawaii, (Oahu) 1857 (Jun. 4) Hong Kong, China to Honolulu, Hawaii via San Francisco, gray folded letter datelined "Hong Kong, 4th June 1857" addressed to L.H. Anthon Esq. at Honolulu in care of Messrs. G.B. Post & Co., San Francisco, endorsed "p Eva Johanna", carried as endorsed by Dutch Ship Eva Johanna that departed Hong Kong Jul. 9th to San Francisco arriving Aug. 31st 1857, entered mails with "San Francisco Cal, Sep 8 1857" cds and matching "SHIP" and "3" rating handstamps, forwarded by G.B. Post probably on Am. Bark Yankee from San Francisco Sep. 9th to Honolulu arriving Sep. 24th.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

A SCARCE HONG KONG TO HAWAII FOREIGN MAIL USE VIA SAN FRANCISCO, ONE OF ONLY 3 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS SAN FRANCISCO "3" CENT DUE HANDSTAMP ON MAIL TO HAWAII.

The "Eva Johanna" encountered severe weather on the way according to the Sep. 1st 1857 Daily Alta California: "…off the Island of Formosa, experienced a severe typhoon, which carried away the main topgallant mast, main topgallant yard and jibboom…". She was left in port for repairs and departed San Francisco back to Hong Kong on Sep. 30th.

W. Brown, Oct/61" at left, Very Fine and scarce.

Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaiian-Islands, Apr. 3, bold cds in black on 1865 unpaid yellow cover to New Bedford Mass., carried by American Bark Comet from Honolulu Apr. 3rd to San Francisco arriving Apr. 20th, "San Francisco Cal., Apr 21" double-circle transit and blue crayon "14" cents due rating, forwarded to North Falmouth with 3¢ brown red (65) vertical pair, bottom stamp with tear, tied by fancy "C" in Segmented Circle cancel paying the double rate, matching "New Bedford Mass., May 24, 1865" cds at left; cover with minor wear and light creasing at left, Fine and interesting use; with 1981 P.F. certificate.

Hawaii, Honolulu, U.S, Postage Paid, Feb 17, red cds (242.03) on 1866 cover to Kansas City, Mo., franked with U.S. 1863, 5¢ brown tied by cog wheel handstamp, matching "San Francisco, Cal., Mar 12" cds alongside; cover with some small light tone spots and slight reduction, otherwise Very Fine; with 2014 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. U.S. 76    Estimate $400 - 600.

Sent aboard the American bark "Smyrniote" departing Honolulu on February 17th and arriving in San Francisco on March 10th, 1866. From there it was sent overland to Kansas City.

Hawaii, Honolulu, U.S. Postage Paid, Jul 22, red cds on double rate cover to Boston, Mass., franked with 1866, 5¢ blue, horizontal pair tied by grid handstamps, in combination with cork canceled 1861, 10¢ green vertical pair, red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp and "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 6" cds; stamp defects and cover reduction at right, Fine appearance.

Cover carried on 14th contract trip by NPTC "Idaho" from Honolulu Dec. 26th to San Francisco arriving Jan. 8th. Entered the mails with San Francisco Jan. 8th duplex for forwarding via Panama.

Hawaii, (Oahu) Honolulu, Mar 31, 1899, duplex postmark on U.S. 1898, 5¢ Trans-Miss issue used prior to U.S. postal stamps being officially used in Hawaii, large margins, small thin at bottom, Extremely Fine appearance, Hawaii became a U.S. territory on June 14, 1900, this usage is quite unusual and very rare.
