Lot 905    

Wells, Fargo & Co., Silver Park, Jun 22, blue oval handstamp on 6¢ pink (U63) legal-size entire with company frank to San Francisco, black Wells Fargo & Co. frank printed over obsolete "Pacific Union Express Co." frank, docketing on reverse indicates 1870 use; cover repaired with wear and soiling, Fine, One of only two recorded examples of the Wells Fargo Silver Park oval..
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Silver Park was a short-lived mining town located in Nevada's Nye County. Wells Fargo briefly maintained an office there in 1870-1871 with H. M. Barnes as agent.

Wells, Fargo & Co's Express, From Soda Springs, Nev., town name handstamped on orange label affixed to 2¢ red entire with black company frank to Virginia City, with rare Wells, Fargo & Co. Express, Soda Springs, Nev. oval handstamp, manuscript notation "Val. $25.00" & "Pd", tiny reduction at left, Very Fine and choice.

"Wells, Fargo & Company, Stage Department, Argenta, Nevada, Sept 24, 1870", printed letterhead and datelined from John Collier to George Dinsmore, letter touches on current Nevada political matters, accompanied by Frank Newton identify names in the letter and brief history of Argenta, "A small mining town in north-central Nevada and was absorbed into Battle Mountain, Wells Fargo had an office there for a short time and ran a feeder stage from the railroad to surrounding areas…", F.-V.F.

Wells, Fargo & Co., Starr City, N.T., blue oval handstamp on 3¢ pink postal stationery (rebacked front) with inverted company frank in black, originating from Monterey with blue Wells, Fargo & Co. handstamp oval, sent to Dun Glen and forwarded to Jamestown, Cal., couple mended tears at top, Fine, a scarce Wells, Fargo & Co. marking.

"Sweetwater, Nev.", straight-line handstamp in violet with manuscript date 3/2/1888 on 2¢ brown entire with company frank to San Francisco, struck on arrival with "Wells, Fargo & Co./San Francisco" oval handstamp in similar violet ink, docketed on rear "3/5/'88" (1888), reduced a bit at right from opening, Very Fine, the only known handstamp from Wells Fargo's Sweetwater office.

(Wells, Fargo & Co.) Treasure Hill, Nev., Nov. 15, manuscript Wells, Fargo & Co. marking on 3¢ pink entire to San Jose with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Nov. 17, Austin, N.T." handstamp, reduced at left, F.-V.F., a scarce usage.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Treasure Hill is an east-jutting spur of the White Pine Range of White Pine County in the central eastern part of Nevada. Hamilton is situated at the northern base of the hill while Treasure City is situated on the hill, 2.5 miles from Hamilton. By early 1881 the mining activity had collapsed as the mining of the hill was dependent on the now depleted deposits. As a result, by 1888 there were only 24 people living there with the principal towns of Hamilton at the base of the hill, the Treasure City on the hill side and the Shermantown went into oblivion.
