"Hughes, Colo., Sept 5, 1871", manuscript postmark canceling in 3¢ green entire to Evans, Col. Ter.; a bit reduced at right, F.-V.F., The earliest of two recorded territorial postmarks from this town., ex-Bauer.Estimate $200 - 300.
Hughes was a station on the Overland Mail route and was named for General Bela M. Hughes, president of the company. Indeed, Hughes barely qualified as a town. It was the junction of the Denver-Pacific and Denver, Marshall & Boulder railroads, but never had commercial import.

"Muddy Creek, Col., May 12th 73", manuscript postmark and matching ms. cancels 3¢ green (147) on yellow cover to Lancaster, Pa., with lengthy and interesting original enclosure datelined "Grinevas Ranch" regarding receiving mail at Muddy P.O. rather than Greenhorn, cattle branding and…Kit Carson the famous Indian fighter figured in this immediate vicinity. Have met his sister in law & been shown the scene of some of his exploits. The Ute tribe of Indians are nearest to us about 50 miles away. They are not hostile at present but there is talk of a general Indian outbreak during the coming summer., mentions party of 150 Ute at Pueblo selling Buffalo skins, beaver and mink in the Grinevas river, etc.; cover slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, ex-Bauer.Estimate $500 - 750.

Muddy Creek Post Office opened on December 8th 1870, and also served as a stage station until the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad arrived in 1876. and bypassed the town.

Ty., Jul 27, sharp strike of red cds and matching target cancel ties 3¢ green (147) on lovely printed Thatcher Bros. corner card cover with preprinted address to Thatcher Bros. & Co. at Trinidad, Colorado, with original 1870 letterhead enclosure that mentioned receipt of gold dust "…Gold Dust matter to hand. I have now sent gold to Denver & when proceeds are reported from there we will credit your account…"; some minor edge staining and reduced slightly at right, a Very Fine strike of this attractive cds, ex-Bauer.Estimate $200 - 300.

Spring Valley was settled in the early 1860s near a large fresh water spring. Travelers going west or north to Denver City enjoyed this luxury. Post Office opened on May 27, 1865, and ceased operation in 1885.
