(Phonography) Phonography, allover advertising on buff cover franked with 1857, 3¢ rose, type I tied by "Providence, R.I." cds, cover with imprint of "Benn Pitman, Cincinnati, Ohio" at bottom, manuscript Phonography message in top left corner written by sender, Very Fine.

Sir Isaac Pitman was an Englishman who invented phonographic shorthand, or phonography, a shorthand system based on phonetics. As it could be adapted to a wide variety of languages, it became one of the most widely used systems in the world. It was his brother, Benn, who popularized phonography in America.

(Phrenology) "The Proper Study of Mankind is Man", illustrated Fowler & Wells advertisement showing Skull with Partitioned Brain Organs, on cover franked with 1851, 3¢ brownish carmine tied by "New Haven, Con., Jun 13, 1857" cds, allover advertisement on reverse; small portion of backflap missing, Very Fine.

The foremost American phrenologists, were the Fowler brothers, Lorenzo and Orson, who began reading heads in New York in the 1840s. Joined by Samuel R. Wells (1820-75) in 1844 their publishing industry churned out vast quantities of phrenological periodicals, pamphlets and books.

(Propaganda) Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage, illustrated Barnabas Bates Postage Reform Propaganda cover showing Steamship, Eagle with Shield & Steam Engine, red "New-York Jun 16, Free" integral cds addressed to Hon. R.M. Price, House of Representatives, Washington D.C., ornate imprint of "D. Felt & Hosford, Stationers" on reverse; some edge wear and small top left corner nick, Very Fine and scarce example of this spectacular Barnabas Bates "Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage" propaganda design.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

In the 1850s, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America. Paradoxically, this cover was sent to a member of House of Representatives under the Congressman's franking privilege to receive his mail free of postage.
