New Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d red brown, imperf, N Z watermark, large margins to touched at top right, strong color, used with 1864, 1¢ pale blue (113 var.) perf 12½ pair (R. 4/10-11), each cancelled by Christchurch district manuscript "X" cancel, pair tied by "Christchurch, New Zealand, JN 14, 64" cds on blue cover to Edinburgh, Scotland, endorsed "Via Marseilles" at top left, reverse with Edinburgh (8.15) arrival cds, receipt docketing at left and red "Board of Supervision, Registered, Aug 15, 1864" handstamp; some edge wear, F.-V.F. and early imperf-perf combination franking for 10d rate via Marseilles. A BEAUTIFUL ADVERTISING USE OF THE 1864 1S GREEN IMPERF ISSUE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM.

The one shilling stamp remained in use for two years after printing because of limited demand.
