New Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d pale blue, worn plate, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, three singles, used with 6d red brown (122), each tied by numeral barred oval, matching "Dunedin, JN 19, 65" cds on cover to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, red London Paid (8.21) transit cds and matching "1d" colonial credit handstamp, reverse with Halifax (9.14) oval and New Glasgow (9.14) arrival double-arc, red crayon "5" credit rating; some wear and small flaws, Fine and unusual destination. New Zealand, 1866, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d deep blue, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, three singles with deep rich color, each tied by numeral "10" barred oval, matching "Oamaru, OC - 3, 66" cds backstamp on 1866 cover to Oxford, England, endorsed "via Panama" and carried by the Kaikoura on trip four, reverse with Dunedin (10.4) transit and Oxford (12.2) arrival cds, minor edge wear and bit of flap missing, F.-V.F., Marcel Stanley, Robson Lowe, November 1977, lot 536. The 6d per ½ oz. letter rate to the United Kingdom via Panama started on June 24th 1866 and was effective until December 8th 1868. Transit was at least 12 days faster than via Suez and Marseilles.

The right side of this pre-retouch stamp shows evidence of plate damage, proving this to have occurred soon after plate put into use.
