Jun 7, 1899" cds to Switzerland, blue crayon "2/T" and "80" centimes due ratings (40c (8¢) doubled to80c), Switzerland 10c, 20c, 50c Postage Dues, each tied by "Bern, 19.VI.99" arrival cds, Very Fine.

Wrapper, 1887, 2¢ green on manila, die 2, unwatermarked, wrapper cancelled by "Chicago, Ill." third-class oval cancel to Russia, likely went by ship via Odessa where censored with "Odessa" censor handstamp; opening tears, Fine and scarce wove paper without watermark use. UPSS No. 1024a.

Lot 1957    

Wrapper, 1899, 4¢ brown on manila, die 3, wrapper uprated with 15¢ dark blue (259), 5¢ blue (304) and 2¢ Hudson Fulton (372), all tied by "Chillicothe, Ohio" double-ovals and purple "Chillicothe, Ohio, Registered, Nov 11, 1909" cds to London, England, New York (11.22) transit backstamp and New York registry label (FX-NY1a) affixed, London (11.22) arrival backstamp; couple stamp flaws, Very Fine and scarce book mailing.

The 26¢ prepaid the 8¢ registry fee plus 18¢ postage for an item weighing up to 36 ounces. This sending likely enclosed a book approximately 1 inch think and originally closed with two paper strips. Books and other large items were sometimes sent wrapped in a stamp wrapper and were permitted as long as the wrapper was not sealed.

Wrapper, 1899, 4¢ brown on manila, die 3, registered wrapper uprated with 1¢, 4¢, 5¢, 6¢ and 8¢ Wash.-Franklins tied by "Chillicothe, Ohio" double-ovals, purple "Chillicothe, Ohio. Registered, Jan 24, 1911" cds backstamps to a library in Saxony, Germany, endorsed "Via German Steamer", New York (1.26) transit backstamps and New York registry label (NY-FX1a) affixed, Saxony (2.11) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and scarce registered book post wrapper use.

Mailed books were a special category of third class and remained so, regardless of weight, even after items weighing more than 8 oz. were moved to parcel post in 1913. The rate was 1¢ per 2 oz. from 1874 until 1925.
