Lot 211

New Zealand, 1857, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d brown, imperf., forgery, unwatermarked, two singles in shades, each with barred oval cancel and one with unusual corner cancel, exceptional presentation of the original design, both with unusual transfer lines that do not appear on the original issue, one example (illustrated) with 1995 P. Holcombe certificate stating in short "in my opinion genuine…There are diagonal lines which do not appear on the original stamp. I think therefore the marks are from poor cleaning or inking of the original plate." and both with 2014 R. Odenweller certificates stating "it is a photo-reproduction with fake cancellations", Very Fine, a fascinating pair of forgeries. Scott No. 9F.
