Confederacy, 1863, 2¢ brown red, ample to large margins, tied by partial Richmond, Va. cds on cover to Amherst Court House, Va. with "Flag of Truce" endorsement at left, cover readdressed to Cool Well with "Missent" and "Forwarded" directives and "Due 8" rating, cover turned with inside franked with manuscript canceled 1863, 10¢ blue (11) and matching "Cool Well, Dec 14" postmark, addressed to Somerset, Va.; cover expertly restored at top with backflap reattached, Very Fine appearance, a very unusual usage.

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines", preprint paper fold, margins close showing part framelines at top and left, large horizontal preprint fold, tied by "JACKSON" straightline cancel and manuscript "June the 9" dating on buff cover to Pendleton S.C.; bit of flap missing and some wrinkling, Very Fine and scarce use; signed Deitz on reverse.

Lot 2401    

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, strip of four with mostly huge margins with scissor cut between last two stamps, tied by two strikes of "Canton Miss., Jan 19" on 1864 homemade brown cover to Lake Village, Arkansas, original Nov. 20th 1863 letter with some war content "…we heard yesterday of another battle in Virginia…we have had quite a battle below Canton…the roar of cannon all over the country was terrific…", letter was apparently held for posting due to the heavy fighting around Canton; third stamp scuff, some light overall toning and wear, Fine and rare 40¢ Trans-Miss. rate use.

A RARE WESTBOUND TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER BEARING A 10¢ ENGRAVED STRIP OF FOUR.

The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi express covers are known, making them about three-times scarcer than eastbound covers. This cover is from a new Trans-Mississippi Express find in 2002 and is the subject of a Confederate Philatelist article by Bush-Jaronski in Jul-Aug 2002 issue that details the full research on the cover and family. Illustrated on p. 260 of "The Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately, Second Edition".

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, combination franking of 11, 12, 11 pair, all four margins and tied by "Richmond Va. Jan 4" cds strikes on green rebacked cover front to Miss Ross Houston at LaVernia, Texas, endorsed "Via Meridian, Mississippi" at bottom left, "Missent" straightline also ties right stamp, Fine and scarce East to West 40¢ Trans-Mississippi use, Krieger Census E41, ex-Keeling, Powell.
Scott No. 11, 12    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

The only Texas soldier in Virginia named "Houston" was Private Russell Houston of Co. F, 4th Texas Inf. (Hood's Brigade) who was discharged in April 1864.
