New Zealand, 1862, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d red brown, rouletted 7, Large Star watermark, rouletting all around, used with 6d red brown (43), both with deep rich color and cancelled by indistinct barred ovals, matching "Auckland, New Zealand, OC 6, 1863" origin cds backstamp on Laver correspondence cover to Sydney, New South Wales, "Ship-Letter, Sydney, OC 13, 1863" arrival backstamp; opening tear, F.-V.F. Scott No. 14c. Campbell Paterson No. A5b (V).

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 6D RED BROWN AUCKLAND ROULETTE AND 6D RED BROWN IMPERF COMBINATION FRANKING.

This is the first recorded letter written by Quartermaster Robert Laver of the 12th. Regiment from the Auckland Camp to his wife care of the 12th Regiment, Victoria Barracks.

The identity of the shades suggest that the stamps may have been from the same sheet.
