Sultana, complete clear strike of red negative circular handstamp on 1849 folded letter to St. Louis, letter datelined from New Orleans, La., Very Fine.
Milgram No. 1329    Estimate $400 - 600.

Between 1836 and 1863, six steamboats bearing the name "Sultana" were enrolled on Western Waters. This "Sultana" is the third of 527 tons built at Jeffersonville in 1843 and was at the time of her launch the largest steamboat of her day.

Ouachita Packet Swamp Fox, red oval handstamp with "Ouachita" missing at top, on blue Feb. 19th 1853 folded Buchannon Carroll correspondence cover from Minden La. to New Orleans La., Very Fine.

Uncle Sam, boldly applied stencil straightline on blue Dec. 4th 1851 folded cover from St. Louis Mo. to New Orleans La. bearing uncancelled 3¢ orange brown (10A), margins to slightly in, that may or may not belong; some soiling, Very Fine appearance, offered as is, ex-Milgram.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE STEAMER "UNCLE SAM" STENCIL STRAIGHTLINE MARKING.

The "Uncle Sam" was built in 1849 and dismantled in 1859.

We record only three examples of the "Uncle Sam" straightline stencil marking:
1. 1851 Dec. 4, St. Louis Mo. to New Orleans La., uncancelled 3¢ #10A, the cover offered here.
2. Jan. 21, cover from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., 5¢ 1847 stamp doesn't belong, ex-Feldman.
3. 1852, folded letter to Saint Louis Mo. bearing 3¢ 1851 issue tied by stencil and "Steam" marking, ex Klein-Somdal.

Lot 894    

S.B. Viola, red two-line handstamp on blue Nov. 27th 1847 folded fill of lading from New Orleans La. to Assumption; blue receipt docketing at left, F.-V.F., ex-Milgram (J.W.M.).
Milgram No. 1417    Estimate $200 - 300.

The "Viola" of 200 tons was built at Louisville Ky. in 1846 and was first enrolled at New Orleans on November 25th 1847.

From Steamer W.A. Violett, bold red oval on folded letter datelined "Troy Miss., March 18th 1851" from the Buchannon Carroll correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Mar 24" cds and matching "Steam, 10" rating handstamp, Very Fine, ex-Milgram.
Milgram No. 1439    Estimate $200 - 300.

In June 1850, Wallis & Hogan were awarded the contract for the Vicksburg to Yazoo City Route 5714 at $1,495 per annum for a three times a week service. The "William A. Violett" of 152 tons was built at Elizabeth Pa. in 1848 with four owners of whom her Master, Capt. Samuel Gwartney was one.
