1817 (Aug. 15) Buenos Ayres, Argentina to Providence R.I. via Baltimore, folded letter datelined "Buenos Ayres, August 15th 1817" with red "Buenos Ayres." two-line and "Franca" handstamps, carried by private ship to U.S., entered mails with red "Baltimore Md. Nov 15" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with red manuscript "20¾" due rating for 18¾¢ plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine and rare use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Lot 1121    

1835 (Aug. 4) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to New York N.Y. via Philadelphia, printed circular with market advice (oil, coffee, etc.), exports and ship sailings, carried as endorsed by ship Charles Wharton, entered mails with red "Phila., 10, Pct" octagonal double-line datestamp and matching Philadelphia Full-Rigged Ship handstamp with red manuscript "14½" cent rating for 12½¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee; red ms. "Recd 11th" docketing at top left, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The Philadelphia Rigged Ship handstamp was used only on incoming mail for addresses beyond the port. It is recorded used from May 1834 to Nov. 9, 1835.

1850 (c.) Melbourne, Australia to Haverhill Mass., blue cover with partial "Forwarded by Rogers, Warfield, Lord & Co., Melbourne" oval backstamp, endorsed "per Steam Golden Age via Panama" at top, "Steam Ship 20 Cts" in circle handstamp, Very Fine.

1860 (Jun. 30) Santiago de Cuba, Cuba to Philadelphia Pa., blue folded letter bearing Cuba ½r blue tied by fancy oval and upon arrival in New York with "Steamship 10" in circle, blue "Cuba, 30 JU 60" cds, endorsed "Correo via Habana" at bottom left and "Primer Vapor" at top left, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 1124    

U.S. Consulate, Valparaiso, blue cachet handstamp on cover sent from Capt Edward Coffin from the Isla La Mocha to his wife in Nantucket, Mass., circular New York "Steamship 20" handstamp applied upon arrival, pencil "Mocha" and "1864" docketing at top, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Captain Edward Coffin was well known on the Pacific coast run. Later he captained a U.S. whaling ship and used the island of La Mocha as a weather haven and watering place on his journeys further South.
