1863 (May 1) Poughkeepsie N.Y. to Brownlow Hill, New South Wales via London, rebacked cover front with red and blue George Washington holding Flag "Death to Traitor" patriotic design bearing United States, 3¢ rose (65) and 30¢ orange (71), each tied by grid cancel and "Poughkeepsie, N.Y., May 1, 1863" cds, red "N.York Am. Pkt., Paid, May 1" exchange cds with magenta "12" cent credit to G.B., carried by HAPAG Line Hammonia from New York May 2nd to Southampton arriving May 14th, red New York Paid (5.14) transit cds, carried by P&O ships via Suez, forwarded upon arrival to Balmain with manuscript "2d" due rating, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Gabriel; with 1994 P.F. certificate.

Australian States: Queensland, 1863 (Jun. 1) Maryborough, Queensland to San Francisco Cal. via London, cover from the Aaron correspondence bearing Queensland, 1d deep rose (7), 2d blue (8) and three 6d yellow green (10a) singles, each tied by numeral "96" radial cancels, matching "Maryborough, Queensland, JU 1, 1863" rimless cds, partial Brisbane (6.2) transit backstamp, red manuscript "1/1d" credit to G.B. rating, carried from Sydney by P&O Northam, red London Paid (8.19) transit cds, closed mail via New York to San Francisco, red "San Francisco Cal, Paid, Sep 21" exchange arrival cds; some edge wear and stamp flaws, Very Fine.

AN ATTRACTIVE QUEENSLAND THREE-COLOR FRANKING ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

THE SECOND EARLIEST RECORDED USE FROM QUEENSLAND TO THE UNITED STATES.

Note the credit of 1/1 claimed by England conforms to the 1863 rate reduction to 1/7. In July 1863, the United States transcontinental rate would be reduced from 10¢ to 3¢, lowering via England rates to west coast.

"1/1" (26¢) credit to U.S., closed mail to San Francisco, red orange "San Francisco Cal., Paid, Dec 29, 1863" exchange arrival cds; small opening tear, Very Fine.

A PRETTY THREE-COLOR NEW SOUTH WALES FRANKING PREPAYING THE 1/8½D RATE TO THE WEST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES.

This cover is a good indication that the lowering of the 1 /8½d rate to 1/7, which officially took place from 30 June 1863 (John White's NSW Postal History book, p338), never went into effect in the Australian Colonies.

Australian States: New South Wales, 1864 (Oct. 22) Sydney, New South Wales to Westport Conn. via London, cover bearing New South Wales, 2d blue, 6d violet (40) and 1s carmine (42), all cancelled by "N.S.W." oval duplexed with "Sydney, OC 22 '64" cds, red crayon "8" pence credit to G.B., carried by P&O Bombay via Southampton, red London Paid (12.22) transit cds and matching "16/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., carried by Allan Line Nova Scotian from Londonderry Dec. 23rd to Portland arriving Dec. 4th, closed bag to Boston, bold "Boston AM. Pkt. '5' Jan 5" due exchange cds for 5¢ inland; reduced at left with some paper loss on reverse, Very Fine three-color franking.

Large Royal Mail deficits without adequate contributions by Australian Colonies led England to raise rates for a short period in 1864.

Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

From July 1863 the 10¢ United States transcontinental rate was reduced to 3¢. The result was that the via Southampton rate to the west-coast became the same as the east-coast rate. This was a step back - no longer could west-coast mail be paid to destination.

San Francisco was an exchange office - mail from England was sent in closed bags so received no USA east-coast markings.

A Detroit, Michigan exchange office was established for mail arriving by rail from Quebec on Allan Line steamships.

Oct 2" cds for four-times the 33¢ British Mail rate via Southampton, endorsed "per Steamer via London", red "N.York, Br. Pkt. Paid, Oct 3" exchange cds with magenta "112/4" credit (four-times 28¢), carried by Cunard Line Java from New York Oct. 3rd to Queenstown arriving Oct. 13th, red "London, Paid, 15 OC 66" transit cds, P&O Avoca from Southampton via Suez and Galle, "Sydney New South Wales, DE 19, 1866" backstamp; flaps refolded and mended at top edge, 12¢ creased from vertical file fold, Very Fine appearance, a very fresh and attractive usage, ex-Gibson, Wunderlich, Paliafito, DuPuy; signed Ashbrook.

THE ONLY RECORDED 90¢ 1861 COVER TO NEW SOUTH WALES FRANKED WITH ADDITIONAL 1861 ISSUE STAMPS.

One of only five 90¢ 1861 covers to New South Wales, all of which are from the Hogan correspondence.

In January 1868, transatlantic rates were lowered and Australian Colonies could for the first time send all mail to the USA prepaid to destination. Accountancy still applied for the new 11d rate from Australian Colonies with the United States due a credit of 3¢.
