1888 (Jan. 31) New York N.Y. to Melbourne, Victoria, cover bearing United States, 2¢ green (213) and 5¢ brown (205), two singles, tied by strikes of "New-York, Jan 31 '88" foreign mail duplex, red "PAID ALL" straightline, San Francisco (2.7) transit backstamp, carried by Union S.S. Co. Alameda to Sydney arriving Mar. 4th, Melbourne (3.6) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

New York red "PAID ALL" straightline applied as required per postal treaty.

1888 (May) Kalamazoo, Mich. to Kew, Victoria, United States 2¢ red brown entire uprated with 1¢ gray blue (206), 2¢ red brown (210) and 5¢ brown (205), all tied by partial barred oval duplexed with indistinct Kalamazoo cds, sent to San Francisco, reverse with San Francisco Rec'd (5.30) cds and framed "Held for Postage" struck, purple "Returned for Postage" circular handstamp, Very Fine and scarce short paid use.

1888 (Sep. 16) New York, N.Y. to Lauceston, Tasmania, U.S. 10¢ brown entire from Scott Stamp and Coin Co. bearing 4¢ green (211) and 10¢ brown (209) pair, each tied by "New York, D" oval cancels, purple "Registered, Sep 16 1888, Branch D, New York P.O." framed postmark, New York (9.15) oval backstamp and Registry Exchange label (FX-NY1a) affixed, Launceston (10.13) arrival backstamp; partial backflap, Very Fine and scarce registered use to Tasmania.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Entire was prepaid 34¢ for two-times the 12¢ treaty rate plus 10¢ registration. The United States-Tasmania Treaty provided a 10¢ registry rate from the United States that was not equivalent to the 4 pence rate from Tasmania.

Australian States: Queensland, 1890 (Jan. 28) Pialba, Queensland to Cambridge City Ind., cover bearing Queensland, 2d blue, 6d yellow tied by "342" barred oval, matching "Pialba, Queensland, JA 28, 90" rimless cds, reverse with Maryborough (1.29) cds and Brisbane (1.31) transit with matching "PAID/ALL" circular handstamp, "San Francisco, Paid All, Mar 15" transit backstamp; small edge tear and stain at bottom right, F.-V.F.

1890 (May 24) New York N.Y. to Sydney, New South Wales, legal-size cover bearing United States, 2¢ carmine (220) and 10¢ green (226) strips of four prepaying quadruple the 12¢ treaty rate, each tied by strikes of "New York, May 24, 90" duplexes, red "PAID ALL" straightline, endorsed "Via San Francisco" and "Documents", San Francisco (5.29) backstamp, carried by ship Zealandia from San Francisco May 31st to Auckland, Sydney (6.26) arrival backstamp; cover and stamp flaws, F.-V.F.

1890 (Nov. 5) New York N.Y. to Adelaide, South Australia, United States 2¢ green (U311) entire uprated by non 2¢ lake (219D), 2¢ carmine (220) singles, each tied by "New York, Reg" registry oval, purple "New York, N.Y., Nov 5, 1890" framed postmark, purple San Francisco (11.10) transit backstamp and San Francisco Cal. (FX-SF1a) registry exchange label affixed, Sydney (12.15) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and scarce carmine-lake 1890 issue franking.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This cover apparently prepaid 20¢ for 12¢ postage plus 8¢ registration, even though South Australia had no treaty with the United States until UPU the following year.

Great Britain, 1890 (Nov. 13) Glasgow, Scotland around-the-world to Brisbane, Queensland and Fonda N.Y., European-size cover bearing G.B., ½d, 1d, 1½d and 3d tied by "Glasgow, NO 13 '90" datestamps to Queensland where remailed with Queensland, 6d yellow green tied by "Brisbane, de 24, 90" duplex and matching "PAID/ALL" circular handstamp to New York, remailed with U.S., 1¢ dull blue (219) and 4¢ dark brown (222) cancelled by matching corks duplexed with "Fonda N.Y., Feb 23, 1891" cds back to Scotland, various backstamps, F.-V.F. and scarce around-the-world use showing the Queensland "PAID ALL" handstamp.

Australian States: Victoria, 1891 (Mar. 20) Melbourne, Victoria to New York N.Y., buff cover bearing Victoria, 2½d brown red (172) tied by "Melbourne, MR 20, 91" duplex, "More to Pay" oval with ms. "7d" due rating, carried by Monowai from Sydney Mar. 23rd, San Francisco (4.17) transit backstamp and "U.S. Charge/To Collect ___ Cents" handstamp with pencil "7" cents due rating, New York (4.22) arrival backstamp; reduced at right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

According to Postal Treaty, should not have been sent on, but Victoria was anticipating the UPU rate and had already issued a 2½d stamp. Charged only the deficient postage in the United States.

The 2½ pence October 1891 UPU rate for all routes brought to an end the most interesting period of Australian Colonies-United States postal history.
