1861, 3¢ rose. Single with natural s.e. at left tied by Philadelphia cds on a small 1865 cover to a "Lieutenant Colonel Branson" in the 62 Reg U.S. Colored Infantry, near Brownsville, Texas with manuscript endorsement "Via New Orleans" at bottom left, slightly reduced at right & top right corner repaired, otherwise F.-V.F., a scarce and attractive example of mail to Black U.S. troops that served the Union in the Civil War, Black troops served proudly during the Civil War, but were not allowed to be officers, Lieutenant Colonel Branson, was one of their white officers.
