Lot 1047
1876 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. As Garrett and Guth put it in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, "Although the low-mintage 1875 eagle was a tough act to follow, the 1876 issue came in with its own tiny mintage of only 687 pieces." While the 1875 date has become legendary for its production of just 100 coins, the 1876 remains underrated, a treasure to be discovered by the discerning collector. The surviving population is estimated at 40 to 50 examples. (PCGS Pop. 5 in AU-53, only 5 graded higher, the highest grade is a single MS-60 example. Total of 34 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.
Realized: $37,500
