The first-date-of-issue D-mint gold dollar, the 1849-D had a relatively large mintage of 21,588 pieces.An estimated 250-300+ examples are known today in all grades, with 85-95 specimens in AU. (PCGS Pop. 18 in AU-53, 125 graded higher, the highest grade being three MS-64 examples, and a total of 236 in all grades, 9/27/11).
