ONE OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS 3¢ TOPPAN, CARPENTER, CASILEAR & CO. ESSAY IN DUSKY BLUE.

It is believed by some student that this die essay was actually a die proof strike of the die used to make the "Roosevelt" and Pan-Pacific small die proofs, while others, including Clarence Brazer, believe this was a die essay for the 1851 issue.
