Millard Fillmore, portrait design on cover to Bath, Me., franked with manuscript canceled 1851, 3¢ dull red, red "Melrose, Mass., Oct 15" cds, with original enclosure from an active Fillmore supporter with interesting content…We are doing all we can for Fillmore here. Have a club meeting every week with able speakers. Attended a Mass-meeting at Charlestown friday afternoon where they flung a monster Fillmore Flag to the breeze 83 by 51 feet suspended from the Bunker Hill Monument near its top., Very Fine.

The American Party (the "Know Nothings") was the remnant of the Whig Party that was left over after the Republican Party was organized. While on vacation in Europe, ex President Fillmore was notified that this group had nominated him for the Presidency. Although he captured only Maryland's eight electoral, votes, he received 22% of the popular vote.
