Confederacy, 1863, 2¢ brown red, left margin horizontal strip of five, margins large to just touching at top of right pair, rich color, tied by blue "Columbia, S.C., Jan 2" cds's on cover addressed to "Edward M. Lazarus, care of Capt. J. R. Mordecai, James Island, South Carolina", manuscript "1/1/65" date docketing at top left; right stamp with corner scuff which is mostly covered by postmark (likely scuffed by date stamp device when postmark was applied), otherwise Extremely Fine, ex MacBride, Hart and Birkinbine; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF TWO KNOWN 1863 2¢ "RED JACK" STRIPS OF FIVE ON COVER SENT TO THE SIEGE TRAIN BRIGADE ON JAMES ISLAND IN THE CHARLESTON HARBOR.

Capt. J.R. Mordecai was Quartermaster of the Siege Train Special Forces stationed on James Island. The "Siege Train" was an artillery brigade attempting to break the Union's hold on Charleston Harbor.
