Forwarded by J.C. Spalding, Honolulu, red oval forwarders handstamp on 1853 buff cover from Honolulu to New London Conn. red "Honolulu * Hawaiian-Islands * Apr 5" cds (Gregory HI28 I) signifying Hawaiian postage of 45¢ was prepaid for nine-times the 5¢ rate, pencil "4½ oz." notation at top left, black "San Francisco Cal. Apr 30" cds and manuscript "92" due rating for nine-times the 10¢ rate plus 2¢ ship fee; some cover wear and edge tear, refolded, F.-V.F., ex-Advertiser.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE J.C. SPALDING HONOLULU FORWARDERS HANDSTAMP.

J.C. Spaulding was a Honolulu commission merchant and importer.

This cover was carried by American Bark "Zoe" from Honolulu Apr. 7th to San Francisco arriving Apr. 25th. After entering U.S. mails at San Francisco, sent on PMSC "Golden Gate" departing Apr. 30th to Panama City arriving May 12th and then by USMSC "Crescent City" from Chagres May 14th to New York arriving May 24th.
