(Hawaii) Paauilo, Nov 17, two-line town and date postmark (203, 1RR) tying 1894, 2¢ brown on cover front addressed to the Enterprise Mill Co. in Honolulu, stamp additionally tied by light Honolulu receiving cds; small tone spots and a few tears in front, F.-V.F., a very rare provisional postmark used for a short time in 1898. Scott No. 75 Estimate $400 - 600.
This mark was considered a private mark (Davey/Bash type 610) for Paauilo Plantation but the Post Office correspondence shows the mark was used as a postmark by the Paauilo office. This locally made device apparently was discarded in favor of staying with type 202 because type 203 made poor impressions.
